Here's one of my fave Dereck Lively games. Miami's center got injured at the start of the game and they went small. If you don't have time to watch the whole game, just watch the first 10 minutes. You can see his defensive impact, no easy buckets for Miami.
Also the offense. I already mentioned how Filipowski liked to play near the rim. Watch the PnR possesions when Lively is the roll man, the restricted area is crowded. He has the gravity as a roll man and people are aware of that. And once you put a playmaker such as Luka or Ky next to this kind of gravity, someone will be open on almost every possession.
Don't get me wrong, there are better prospects than Lively in this draft, but don't sleep on him just becouse he doesn't have some flashy stats.

Not a determination if he will be a good pro or not, but it appears he is a good kid.

My second round guys (eventhough I think some go in the first).
Andre Jackson- Love him. More athletic, better dribbling, not as good of a shooter Josh Green
Jaime Jacquez- Just watch, some team is going to draft him late first, early second and he is going to have a long career and be able to play important big game minutes.
Trayce Jackson Davis- Some limitations, but think he will be able to be a role player on the right team.
James Nnaji- There is at least one of these guys every draft. A really athletic, raw big man overseas who looks awesome in highlights. I typically bite hook, line and sinker. Most don't pan out.
Most of the guys in the 20's and 30's that I like are older. There are some youngsters I like, but they are really a role of the dice
Mid second round guys:
Jordan Walsh- Can't really shoot and looks to be uncomfortable dribbling. But he can defend and I think this gets him on the floor and will allow him time to develop shooting and dribbling
Undrafted guys that I like...some will get drafted. There are a ton of them and I hope the mavs move fast and target one
Adam Sonogo- Uconn
Drew Timme- He is going to have a hard time playing in the NBA. But I would like to throw a flier at him. Really good college player, but has an uphill battle in the pros
Jaylen Clark- one of the top defenders in the draft
Chris Livinstone- a classic role of the dice. Highly ranked entering college but needs a ton more time.

Really like Sanogo but in most mocks he is a mid 2nd round pick.
Going back to the Mavs workout list. My favorites among the guys that could go undrafted are Drew Peterson and Craig Porter Jr.
Peterson reminds me of Kyle Anderson. Lanky guy with handles and passing vision. Not the best athlet but knows how to position himself. Can basically play any position from 2-4. No weakness. Just not sure if all the things he did on an above average level in college translate to the NBA. Single standout ability is missing and usually that´s how a player earns minutes in the NBA.
Porter Jr is one of a kind. Cannot remember a 6´2 main ballhandler that is also among the conference leaders in rebounds and blocks. Wichita also has a good track record when it comes to multi year college guards (in the last couple of years...Shamet, VanVleet, Reaves).
Would love to see both on the Mavs summer league roster.

Yeah I expect he is drafted too. This appears to be a odd draft though. Late second round feels like a lot of teams are not crazy on the draft depth. So you may see a lot of draft and stash gambles. Plus, two second round picks were forfeited, so a few guys will be really intriguing who go undrafted.

The Mavs will have many balls to juggle on Thursday. Maybe they get a higher rated guy who drops to them and they just wind up taking the pick. If the picks go as most have the top 9 (I still think this is doubtful), the Mavs will be in an interesting spot. Can they leverage two of Orlando, OKC, Toronto, New Orleans against each other? It is a delicate dance and you can't overplay your hand.
When I look at trading back to 15 plus, it gets a little rocky to me. I like some guys but for the most part I see a lot of coin flips on prospects. So if I were to consider moving down there, I would really need to be a believer in the vet who would be a part of that deal.

Young Chandler was a long time ago but I remember him being more fluid and explosive than Lively. Both were highly rated, offensive raw players leaving high school. Mavs have better brought him in. It does sort of bother me, he didn’t get measured at the combine. But that is a small gripe.
He will need time but you can’t tell me he can’t play 20-25 minutes right away. I mean he would be playing with a generational point. Just have him do 3-4 things and slowly bring him along with the rest of his game.

On paper it should be easier for Lively. Chandler entered the league with star expectations (2nd pick). Bulls asked him to post up and create for himself. League wasn´t ready for a mobile defender/rim runner and it took nearly 10 years for him to find his role. He wasted away on some of the worst teams in league history (New Orleans/Charlotte dumpster fire). Add some minor injuries and you have one of the biggest busts of the 00s. Mavs basically got him for for free.

I love Lively, but for the Mavs he's too much of a project to take on before the 20th pick or so.

Lively opened at +1400, moved to +1000 a few weeks ago and this recent jump is within the last day. Hendricks and Dick have remained 1 and 2 in odds since it opened. Fun to monitor as we get closer to draft day.
Monday before the draft update from DK: Lively +250, Dick +330, Hendricks +400, Bufkin +500, Coulibaly +600, Wallace +650, and Black +1000

I really don’t get it why suddenly every mock has us taking Lively and would prefer Nnaji who played a similarly small role in Spain but looks a lot more athletic. If we’re looking for nothing more than a rim runner I think he has much better tools for that role than Lively who moves like he’s stuck in the mud Imo. At this point McGee might still have more pop in his legs than Lively.
Man I’d be severely underwhelmed if it’s him. Literally the least intrigueing out of Coulibaly, Dick, Hendricks, Walker, Black, Nnaji, Wallace, Bufkin to me.

Smells like a smoke screen to me considering all the reports these last few weeks that he was consistently rising

Probably. It may turn out true, but I would believe very little that comes out the next few days.

Not that it’s any surprise or breaking news, but the conviction in Jake Fischers answer about the Mavs trading the pick (really didn’t leave any wiggle room) should probably be noted. I’m just hoping it’s a trade down in the teens and not a complete trade out. I can’t really see many scenarios where they leave Thursday with no player drafted and it not be a failure imo.

"they're in prime position to get something of value back"
But, what? Prime, because its pick #10? Prime because teams will be dumping some high salary guys (like we just saw)?
That was pretty darned confident for someone who isn't a big self-promoter or a big attention seeker from what I've seen and heard of him over time.

Agree with this. We have to trade down. Let’s say Hendricks slips and we get him at 10. How do we fill out the rest of the roster? It’s tricky. We need multiple bites at the apple

I can see lots of them.
Not sure why everyone is being so dramatic about the draft this year after we've neglected it for so long and for once have a legitimate reason to move the pick.

2. deep draft. Can get some high ceiling players later than usual
3. need more players that will get better over time.
We need to build something to sell to Luka and Kyrie. It would be nice to add to what we have(green/Hardy)

One of the dramatic parts is that Dallas HAS to announce the pick as theirs if there is no trade down... So the closer this thing gets without a trade down announced, the higher the risk becomes that we keep the pick and lose Luka if we do not improve.
