My hot draft take for today: Leonard Miller will have a more impactful career than Brandon Miller. I like guys who used to be point guards, grow seven inches in a short time period, and can score from every level, rebound, and play defense.

Also, he’ll have a better career than his teammate.

Some of those guys who have short growth periods with massive height increases also have injury issues. Like KP is more available issues...

Wasserman updated his mock draft for bleacher report today and still has the Mavs taking Lively and passing on Hendricks which would be…. A choice

That would make it a fun time here. LOL.
With the Mavs looking to be much better now, taking Lively at 10 is questionable. He did not play like a top 10 pick this year. Although, it is possible he has made a leap since the end of his freshman season. I am sure several guys have. His defensive metrics that Sam Vecenie posted are really impressive. The shooting hype doesn't really interst me at this time. I would be more interest if he can do some of the Bam things. Create off the role, make a play, hit a mid jumper, etc. Him Shooting open threes will probably be something any defense would prefer when you are playing against Luka.
As I have mentioned before, we may look back two years from now and think he was the perfect player to put around the rest of our players. A guy who will never be a go to offensive force but one you can build your defense around. But for a team that is feeling the pressure to be good now, that may be too long for them to wait. We will see.

Looks like my Capela trade back idea has turned into a Collins trade back. How disappointing.

No shot Hendricks falls, much to my dismay:
Quote:While Detroit must react to the Rockets’ decision at No. 4, I’m hearing the Pistons will be strongly considering five prospects with their selection if they stay put at No. 5: Amen and Ausar Thompson (Overtime Elite), Cam Whitmore (Villanova), Jarace Walker (Houston) and Taylor Hendricks (Central Florida). All five of those prospects have worked out with Detroit over the last two weeks, according to multiple league sources who agreed to provide background while not being authorized to speak publicly. Hendricks, in particular, impressed in front of Pistons executives and coaches, most notably with his shooting. The 6-foot-9 forward, has the potential to be an impactful 3-and-D wing for the Pistons immediately upon arriving in the Motor City, assuming he ends up being the pick. There’s room to grow into something more, too, if he can improve his ballhandling and decision-making. The 19-year-old forward with a 7-foot-1 wingspan can defend multiple positions, as well, due to his ability to slide his feet.
Ausar Thompson also has some big supporters in the Pistons’ front office, according to those league sources, and very well could be who Detroit takes in Thursday’s draft. The 20-year-old Ausar is more of a wing than his brother, but both are supreme athletes with good size. In his 2023 NBA Draft Guide, colleague Sam Vecenie wrote that Ausar Thompson reminds him most of Andre Iguodala. I couldn’t agree more. The potential Ausar Thompson has a secondary or tertiary creator for others really drives that home, as do his physical gifts, finishing ability and questionable jump shooting

If we go off the small samples of what Nico is looking for, i think he likes pedigree. Big time recruits. And maybe even big time recruits whose shine has slipped a little.
Look at Hardy last year. We've also worked out Emoni Bates.
If you go back 1 year, Lively was a top 5 recruit in the nation. Hendricks was nowhere in the top 50. So its not out of the realm of possibility that the Mavs (and many other teams) have Lively rated higher than Hendricks due to this.

Then they better find a way to pick up Whitehead late in the 1st or even early 2nd round. He´s the Hardy of this draft.

Glad you mentioned Whitehead. He is the perfect example of what i can see Nico and the Mavs doing with some sort of trade down scenario.
Would be nice to find a way to get an extra pick in that 25-30 range

I tend to agree with that line of thinking and feel like often times too much stock is put into one year of college basketball while ignoring the context around players (especially in Lively’s case). But fundamentally I just can’t support drafting a big who specializes in drop coverage that seems like even if he hits his ceiling he’s be played off the court in the playoffs if there’s a high rated big wing available like Hendricks or Walker. If those guys are off the board I could talk myself into Lively a lot easier.

This is largely a nine-player draft - Vic, Scoot, B. Miller, Cam, Amen, Ausar, Black, Walker, and Hendricks, with there being some question marks on Ausar. If none of the other nine teams reach, then trading down might become a very wise choice - unless the Mavs feel they just have to have Lively. Or Coulibaly. If it's between Gradey and trading down, I'm trading down.

I´m thinking what if the Mavs simply acquire an additional pick(s) without giving up or trading down at all.
Pacers: #26 + #29 + #32
Hornets: #27 + #34 + #37 + #41
Two teams that own 44% of the picks between 26-41 or over 50% of picks between 26-34. Surely there is an opportunity to grab an additional pick.
THJ + Bullock + two future 2nd rounds for Theis + McConnell + Nwora + #26 + #29.
Going by the latest mock draft by Givony that could get you Leonard Miller at #26 and Dariq Whitehead at #29. Little sceptical those projections are accurate, but let´s assume they are.
I´d probably just pick Dick at #10, but if Orlando wants him bad enough maybe you can gamble on Isaac for Bertans and still pick up Lively. Depends on the Mavs evaluation.
Theis/Bitadze/BolBol/Lively (center by committee for less than 15M a year). Also if you decide to make a move for Capela, Ayton with the 2027 pick, you at least have 3-4 viable cheap centers to offer as a replacement.

We are not the Dallas Harrassericks for no reason. At least this time you actually get two players for those 10M dollars.

Leonard Miller jumpshot will need to be reworked from ground up. He has terrible mechanics and looks stiff as hell shooting it. He is a multi year project.
The other Miller has a smooth jumper, in no way does Leonard ever have a more impactful career Brandon.

No mention of Cam Whitmore? He's a top-10 pick easy. Some mocks have him going to Houston at 4.

Why there is questions about Ausar and not Black? They seem to have a lot of similarities with Ausar being the one with better physical tools.

I think that is fair. I am just having trouble evaluating the brothers. From what I understand, a lot of the players in that league are younger. While the Thompson twins turn 21 in January. I also don't know if most of the people playing in that league are division 1 caliber players. Their highlights look great, but it is just tough for me to evaluate.
Black's shot does look a little rough, so I think there are certainly questions about that as well.
