Per Shams this morning….
Dallas Mavericks
The Jazz are expressing strong interest in Mavericks forward Dorian Finney-Smith, as teams have gotten the impression that Dallas would be open to moving the 29-year-old in the right deal for a star-caliber player, sources say. The Mavericks have an incredibly high price threshold for teams reaching out about Finney-Smith, rival executives say.
In seven seasons with the Mavericks, Finney-Smith has established himself as a critical two-way wing, well-liked teammate and important for the team’s culture, including being a favorite of MVP candidate Luka Doncic. But it’s clear that Finney-Smith has also become one of Dallas’ main pieces if the organization is to pull off a blockbuster deal for an All-Star player ahead of the deadline or in the offseason.
Finney-Smith signed a four-year, $55 million extension last season, placing him under contract through 2024-25 with a player option for 2025-26.

Jazz have a ton of picks. Can you get two 1sts for DFS? A 1st and Vanderbilt?

This would be certainly something very interesting. I think Vando is not much of a step down from DFS in terms of quality and Mavs would get an additional asset for the big deal. THT, Vando and 1st for DFS to get the salaries right and Jazz get a bit more value since they don't play THT. Gay or NAW could be another options.

Well, at least we have something new to discuss rather than the same dozen names over and over.
Utah has three picks in 23. They also have three TPE’s of size. Two in the $9.6-$9.7 range and one in the $6.7 range. They are also $7mm under the tax.

Mavs said to have a price for DFS. They better if negotiating with Ainge. This leaks so other teams make bids for DFS right?

I would be fine with the worst of the three. If my understanding is correct, this would also free the 25 pick and Mavs could become a serious player this TDL.

Love Vanderbilt but Shams says Mavs would be targeting DFS in a move for an "All-Star caliber" player, so not sure the name fits the rumor.
Really interesting thing about Vanderbilt ... he's a 6' 8" forward who can be a menacing point-of-attack defender. He also defends bigs and rebounds. He's just the sort of positionless player that would fit in Dallas. On the other hand, he can't shoot, so he would need to play next to a big who does.... Wood?
Still, Vando isn't an "All-Star" so who else might Dallas be targeting?

Does the all-star caliber player have to come from Utah? Or, do the Utah assets produce what we need to go get the player from a third team?
Vandy is one of the players I talk about when I mention needing to surround Wood with the types of players who make him work defensively. Maxi proved to be that, but he’ll always be a limited minutes guy.

I don’t think this is true because in theory we could still lost our 2024 pick with the protections we have in place today so 2025 would be off limits without any conditional language in it.

Really surprised more people haven’t jumped on the news that NYK would trade Quickley if Fournier is sent out. This is exactly the premise I used in my wide NYK trade. That trade (with SD’s play of late and news of DFS being available) looks at least our first back if not more firsts than just that worthy of consideration.

If this is true and the Knicks want Bullock then Bullock/McGee for Fournier/Quickley in a heartbeat please.

The protections are still in place until the pick is conveyed. Those protections still include the chance yhe 25 is dealt, so unfortunately, no, we can’t trade the 25.

Correct. I had this wrong earlier. Making a 23 pick allows us to trade ‘a’ 2025 pick if that pick were unencumbered. But, our 25 pick is encumbered. So, we’d either have to remove the protections on the pick NY has or insert provisional language or get a 25 and a 23 from Utah. .

I can’t find this info anywhere, can you send a link? Apologies if it’s somewhere in this thread.
I just realized Bullock/McGee doesn’t work and the Knicks would probably require Hardy in return but I’d be willing to part with Hardy if Quickley was the return.

That report was reposted but was from December. Subsequent reports have indicated NY less likely to be willing to move IQ

Very seriously doubt they’re talking about taking on bad salary in the deal (McGee). Like I’ve said before, we have to go wide with our trade in irder to extract value out of a NYK deal cause all our salary matching money is tied to bad-to-abysmal money. When we go wide, we’re giving up some good role players, so NYK need to give up more.
Revised wide NYK trade:
NYK gets: SD/DFS/Bullock/Powell/Frank
Dal gets: Quickley/Toppin/Reddish/Hartenstein/Fournier/Rose/our 23 FRP/Mil 25 FRP

If DFS is the outgoing and a star is incoming, who is the star that makes sense? DFS starts as our four. Do we need a four in return? A five and Wood moves to the four?
Said all-star has to not be valued by Utah (because they are set with LM) and DFS has to not be valued by said all-stars current team (because they are made up of a bunch of DFS types already). Sounds like Siakam.
