There are a million details we might never know about the motivations of various parties here.
What's truly concerning, honestly, is how infrequently the Mavs "win" these little negotiations. They didn't trade Brunson at the deadline because they thought they could keep him. They knew what their tax situation would be, so they must've known then what their upper limit would be on his next contract. They calculated that they'd be able to keep him at a price they deemed acceptable. They were wrong.
It probably happens to every team, but it suuuuuure seams to happen to Cuban a LOT.

Yeah, good point. When we all have to go on anti-depressants next season, he'll make a killing selling them to us much more cheaply than we could get them through our insurance.

More seriously...
Cuban´s portfolio and current financial situation is an interesting topic. Mavs make up more than half of his net worth. Hard to tell how other investments are doing but some rumors suggest that he lost money. Feels like the Mavs turned into his safety depot.

Hypothetically if the Mavs have a good season next year sans-JB, will you revisit this thread and look back on the meltdown?
Do you not think it's in the realm of possibility that the Mavs are just fine next year with the return of THJ (who you've gone to bat for against me time and again), and the addition of Wood?
Do you think the alternative (if the rumors are true), matching JB to 28 mil a year is a smart move for roster building?

In 2018-2019, Khris Middleton averaged 18/6/4 on 44/38/84 shooting splits. In the playoffs, he averaged 17/6/4 on 42/44/86 shooting splits. Bucks lost in the ECF. Middleton at age 28, got the max contract at $35M AAV. At the time, it was seen as a gross overpay.
"Can't win with Middleton as your #2!" Bucks figured, "hey this is the best we can do, we have no other choice, no one else is coming to sign in MIL." Keep chugging along and hope for the best.
Brunson averaged 18/4/5 on 50/39/85 shooting splits as a starter this season. In the playoffs, he averaged 22/5/4 on 47/35/80 shooting splits. Mavs lost in the WCF. Brunson at age 26, got offered $22M AAV from his incumbent team.

I could be wrong here, but I think when the next wad of tv money drops, the cap will go up and this will end up looking like a bargain.

I love THJ. Don't try to misdirect me whilst mid meltdown, good sir.
The point is that a team none of the naysayers thought had enough talent is about to wave goodbye to their second best offensive player. Instead of getting more talented, they're going to have to fight to get back to the previous level, and my strong suspicion is that they'll come up short.
Can't have it both ways.

Hey man, I was serious. I find this turn of events fairly depressing.

I like JB alot. I think he is a very good player, and I like his attitude, but I'm more upset at the asset management than him leaving for that much money. As much as I like JB, he is a point guard, so he wants to run point.
Losing him and not being able to replace him due to poor asset management is the thing that pisses me off, but I don't think he is worth close to $30M.
I also think he is undersized and Utah was a perfect matchup for him. If LAC stays healthy and ends up in the playoffs and Mavs played them again, I think their length would still give him trouble.

Giannis only averaged 14.9pts / 6.9reb / 3.6ast in his first four seasons...you are not paying players based on their rookie or sophomore production.

The Mavs were murdered defensively in the playoffs in the minutes JB played. He was a HUGE liability.

Good news is the Mavs now have a huge amount of air in his place. Can't wait to see the defensive stops air makes this year

New York going all in is a small respite in this gloomy situation.
