Looking at the current Lakers he would be an upgrade over Deandre. Maybe even Dwight.

Yes. Most of the folks wanting him are Lakers fans.

That's not the best endorsement right now.

For reference, this is just $5mm more than THJ. I think he gets this easily.

That's not the Mavs' problem. The problem is that we're paying two other guys who can't live up to the roles that their contracts would indicate. Need to get out from under those two and figure out how to get the rest of the core.

And there's no excuse for the Mavs not to know one way or another if that's the case.
If JB plans to go to the Knicks and wants to keep his cards close to the vest so that his new team doesn't lose assets acquiring him, forgive me if that doesn't make me love him as a human being from the standpoint of a Mavs fan.

I will be really interested if Dallas made an aggressive push to sign him this offseason. Maybe the answer from Jalen's camp was No, but 4 years at 13 million-ish for a guy like Jalen is life changing. Maybe he wanted to gamble on himself and may make 5-6 million more per year. If that is true, there is nothing the team could do. But there is risk of injury there also. If Mavs never made an aggressive push, this is another blunder imo.
Even if Jalen does not want to leave, using the Knicks as leverage is the smart move.
As far as the tax goes, that is the cost of doing business for Cuban. If he tries to cut corners now, it will be the last straw for me to ever view Cuban in good light any longer. Maybe you can find ways to reduce $ moving forward but if he cuts corners or reduces our talent due to the cap, then we are just counting the days until Luka leaves imo.

I'd be pretty shocked if the Mavs didn't have a pretty good idea about what's coming with Brunson. It's we who are in the dark, unfortunately, but we do know one thing: he's never going to be the starting PG here, really, though I suppose calling him that on the lineup card is an option.

I wonder if there is any market for Hardaway with a good team. Maybe you are looking at the same teams who may sniff around Buddy Heild. I don't think Dallas ships Hardaway to a bottom dweller...regardless if you think that is a right move or not.
It would really help if he played better the next few weeks. Would the Lakers go for a win now move with a guy like Talen Horton Tucker???
It is just a pretty big salary with several years left for a guy who really hasn't looked right this year.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I really don't mind the THJ contract, or at least I wouldn't if he were still being featured here as he was the past two seasons. Don't get me wrong, he hasn't been very good this year, so I'm not on my couch screaming "get it to Hardaway" or anything, but I think that's due in some part to the new schemes. He's just the very last guy on the team to adjust (doesn't mean he won't, or that they won't figure out a way to meet him halfway at some point).
I feel like the teams who wanted him over the summer would still be interested. Clearly, they were interested in giving him a specific role within their respective offenses, and I see no reason to think he couldn't succeed in a role more similar to what he thrived in here last year.
I also think that Hardaway, maybe more than any other player currently on this roster, represents the opportunity to get this offense up and running again. If I were the Mavs I'd be very focused on trying to determine how he can fit better into this puzzle. Or, I'd be very focused on moving him.

It's a fair contract for a top-20 starting SG. That's what he should be. There are better deals out there, but plenty worse. The problem is you're paying for offensive production but getting KCP without the defense. He's not starting and his minutes are down. I mentioned this in another thread, but this team needs to find some consistency in the rotation and a bench identity. If Hardaway is going to come off the bench he needs to settle into a role. Stop trying to fit in. Stop forcing things. Get out of your head. Just play the game and be that 28-30 min tough-as-nails 16 ppg scorer we've seen before.
He'll get there but I don't think his head is right at the moment. Good example is the last game. He nailed two threes in a row so he jacked up a wild ass heat check three that had no chance. Dude just needs to settle down and let the game come to him. Get in rhythm and take his shots and they'll start to go in. He's his own worst enemy when he tries to get his mojo back all back at once.

I agree with your POV, overall.
I've said this I don't know how many times, but I just don't think Hardaway is a bench player type. There is a tendency to look at these guys and arrange them according to some type of made up "overall rating" and make sure the top 5 overall scores are the starters, and while I can understand the desire to make sense of the roster, I just don't think it works that way.
Hardaway doesn't strike me as a 6th man, like at all. He's not an offensive creator, which is what every historically great 6th man brings to the table. Brunson? Sure, he'd be great in that role, if he's happy with it. A dream fit, actually. Obviously, he's up and coming and that might not be an option available to the Mavs at this point. It might be "start him or trade him" time.
But for Hardaway, I think he's a starter, and much more worth his contract in a high-minute, offensively featured role (one that's focused on creating shot opportunities for him like last season's Mavs offense). If they've determined (and I'm not sure they have - I think they're experimenting) that he's not going to be that here, then I think it's really important he's moved ASAP. I'm one of Hardaway's biggest fans, but I'm not excited in the least to watch him come off of the bench. I don't think he'll ever be successful in that role.

Interesting take on THJ. I guess I always thought of him as great 6th man option….but he is not a creator as you suggest which one of the usual characteristics of that role. He is a volume shooter and can score in bunches which is what I was looking at. As for JB, I think he wants to start….I think he wants to run a team….I want him on the Mavs….but we may have to trade him. At least his value is improved with his play this season.
