You are right we don't know.
But that was 7 seasons ago and between now and then, Kidd basically fell out of graces with the NBA as a head coach and went through a sort of "rehab" by being an assistant in LAL. And everything that Kidd has said about learning under Vogel (who is incredibly KIND) is about learning how to be a better communicator who really listens to other people.
P.S. You can't really argue with the immediate results of that coaching style though (as much as I think long term it is a ticking time bomb)...for he took them from 15-67 to 41-41 and the playoffs.

I just don't know, friend. He certainly doesn't instill confidence in me when I hear him speak publicly and we have a lot of horror stories about his head coaching stints. And yet, there are players who love him (Giannis) and players who want to play for him (Dame) so that's a positive. I hope that he has grown as a coach.

If we can somehow manage to trade/get Dragic and Lauri, i could move away from the ledge for this season

RE: Kidd's Coaching Past & Choosing Him
Something I keep coming back to is DIRK.
- Dirk knows RC intimately and his personality and coaching style.
- Dirk knows Luka and played along side him.
- Dirk knows Kidd intimately as a player.
- Dirk is an incredibly good human being.
If Dirk really believed that Kidd was the right guy for the job to replace RC (and that is what we have been told), then I think you have to trust Dirk on this one. He has an inside perspective that we frankly don't have.

Dirk also pushed for the Rondo trade even though RC was completly against it. I love DIrk (see the username) but I am not sold on his front office/coaching/player evaluation skills.

I’m very glad to see Luka is not a 2 button undone guy.
Thank you Donnie.

These are good points! I think it's also possible that Dirk's amazing loyalty might cloud his judgement on these types of decisions. Hopefully not, but I could see Dirk thinking "Yeah, this could work!" for any coaching candidate that he has a relationship with.

Dirk being nice might work against him here though. He never played for Jason Kidd the coach even if Kidd was "like having a coach on the floor". Dirk is also really malleable having been coached by the likes of Nelson, Johnson and Carlisle who all have different approaches. I believe Dirk wants what is best for the Mavs and Luka, but he also wants his friend (Kidd) to do well.
I'd have a short leash with Kidd personally and I also be looking at the landscape for possible, long term alternatives. My key takeaway from the Luka presser was that he values continuity. In my mind, Kidd is the most unstable piece of our puzzle after KP.

I could see Igor Kokoskov getting promoted if Kidd doesn't work out...
