I'm waiting for Dan or someone to do the math, but I'd be pretty surprised if this move didn't put the team over the tax line, or right up to it, and I'd be equally surprised if we didn't see at least one of those three outgoing in a salary dump to avoid paying the tax this year. Gafford and PJW have the two longest-term deals on the books, so there's an element of longterm planning to that thinking as well. Heck, avoiding the tax this year is longterm thinking.

But looking at the depth chart the way I have it - to me, it makes SO MUCH sense. You can bring one of those bench players in (almost any of them) and slide people around to play differently. So much positional versatility, so much synergy.

I think your depth chart is spot on and I think the 3 question mark guys will be moved before the start of the season. I think Naji will be gone also. I'm excited to see this young team grow together. I love how they have added so much young talent. They've done a great job of building a young, exciting roster. I'm excited for next season.

Didn't even have to give anything up and get an interesting player (albeit an expensive one, considering we're talking about a rookie deal still).

What does this do to the tax line? I imagine there's still something that needs to be outgoing in another deal for financial purposes...right?

This will eat most of the space under the tax.  We had about $14mm and Risacher makes $13.8.  So the remaining space is basically the $2mm for Nembhardt.  We have about $7mm left from the TPE. 

I’m into it also.  Accumulating looks at talent without long term commitments similar to Aldama and Sasser.   Atlanta, Detroit and Memphis basically gave these guys away to prioritize something different.  The main thing is that the set us up for a fairly sizable consolidation trade at some point in the next couple of years

Forgot about Marshall...edited to add him. Sorry, typing too fast. 

I doubt ALL of them will be gone, but I don't think those 4 guys are factoring into the thinking here at all - that was my point, overall. I think they're focused on the under 25 guys and how each of them fit with Flagg. That's all.

PJ basically hasn't played any small ball five for the Mavs. But if we look back at his time with the Hornets that was his best position. Knowing how much Ujiri values positional versatility and how often the Raptors would play small ball lineups. Would anyone be suprised if they have PJ in front of Gafford in the depth chart? They still have Cisse (and potentially Lively) for traditional center stuff but for me this once again screams vision 6'9.

I think he’s a more athletic DFS. The reason the whole league is down on him is he hasn’t shown any offensive creation potential. That’s why I wasn’t really interested in trading assets for him. I don’t think there a ton of upside there. But he can be a valuable 3 and D.

Ok, interesting. So it's conceivable that this is the last move of the summer. The books are still in a tenable place, even if the backcourt is not. 

Maybe we should get back to the "trade one of the vets for a guard" idea?

I really hope LeBron picks the Warriors. I think the Mavs FO have their eyes on the deal I proposed earlier for a long time. If they acquire Butler/Lendeborg for Gafford/Washington/Thompson, they´d have completed the youth movement. Have total cap flexibility going forward and if the situation presents itself to actually build a contender they could re-sign Butler and Kyrie on discount deals next summer.

It’s Euroleague west around here. One of my primary takeaways coming out of Summer League was that Nembhard’s Mavs tenure was done, and I figured he would be in a subsequent trade once the next round of stuff started happening. If not, he was going to be the roster victim to get to 15. He’s a great story, but he just didn’t fit the Massai / Schmitz mold. We have an army of young forwards with tons of potential.

Exactly! Didn't give anything up other than room below the tax line (and didn't put them into the tax), and while his rookie deal is on the big side, there's plenty of time to work with him before having to worry about an extension. If he's a dud, no harm done, but if his potential wins out it's a HUGE infusion of young talent. 

I think the new guys are super smart.
