Two weeks ago I share some clips tom his Instagram page with interviews. I was really impressed and seems like the ideal Masai candidate. We will see how he is in rh nba but this is a big get that fits in what they are trying to build/sell

Agree. I think it sounds sexier that it actually is at #9.

But if they move and get OKC's #12, that's when it feels likely.

edit: Masai does love drafting big wings that can't shoot. Morez Johnson come on down.

Could this year’s Michigan squad (massive front court size) and the 2023 FA team (3-4 guard lineups) be much different.  Both ran and shot 3’s.  But came at it from very different places in terms of lineup formula.

That "massive front line" ran up and down the court like bunch of guards... so there's that. There was a lot of movement, a lot of assists, a lot of transition play in that Michigan team. They could flat out score. They averaged over 90 ppg in the NCAA tournament.

And still were the best defensive team in the nation.

Terry Stotts for lead assistant? I think it would be a good choice as May acclimates to the NBA and would help speed the process.

I'd say this move makes the following more likely:

PJ and Naji staying - could see them both working in Mays system
Gafford is traded
Kyrie stays - this is going to be a system based on spacing and basketball smarts. Kyrie best on the team in regards to that
Klay would be interesting - because he provides spacing, likely going to be switch heavy on defense. He might be a good fit - quick 3s and smart player

Î guarantee you 100% the Mavs decided to leak this tonight to increase the Michigan pressure on some teams. We not playing Cuban checkers anymore. You want Mara or Lendeborg @ Warriors and Thunder? Our new head coach loves them. We happy to take them at #9. You better get serious. They definitely playing some sort of angle here, otherwise they´d have kept it quiet until Friday. Ujiri is no leaking blabbermouth.

Also I saw May´s interviews and he sounded like a very smart and competent human being. Great age, too. Was actually my #1 choice. No doubt the players will love him on a personal level.

May was my number 1 guy, just thought the chances of him leaving Michigan were zero. He has built programs (rebuilt in the case of Michigan), but building an NBA team is a whole different beast. He seems up to it, very exciting times for us!

It's easy to think of President - GM - coach as a strict heirarchy.  Each has their defined roles and absolute authority within the role.

But I think it's a little more nuanced than that.  

I suspect it's more like a round table, where each party voices their opinions, discussions and counterpoints ensue, and a consensus is built. Even if the dissenters aren't in agreement with the final decision, they understand how and why it was made.  This is how good management operates.

What role does the coach play in the drafting process?  It would be really stupid for whomever ultimately makes the selection to ignore the coaches' wishes and preferences.

I kinda suspect that the discussions with Mr. May have had a significant element involving this current draft.  Perhaps this is the reason the decision was delayed until the last minute - so that they could collect intel about other teams' interest in Michigan players.

So maybe the deal has been in the works for weeks.

Well, I'm the first to admit I don't follow the college game, so no idea if this guy can coach. My initial feeling is one of disappointment, but I'm going to give it an open mind. It's not lost on me that he's a top college guy and very successful - I understand that this is an impressive hire in terms of likelihood. Time for me to do a deep dive on who Dusty May is, but in the meantime, here are my initial thoughts:

He seems to be at an energetic age, and everyone here goes out of their way to note how hard Michigan plays. I'm going to assume he's a good motivator, and hopefully good at the relationships part of the job (Kidd's one and only strong suit).

I suuuuuuure hope he's up on what works, offensively, IN THE NBA, and that we're not about to have to watch more two-big basketball.

I could be wrong, but this hire screams "slow play" to me. This is the move of a franchise ready to be patient, even with a coach learning the league. I like it in that sense.
