For me, it's simple. Teams still don't guard DFS; but they no longer leave Kleber.
Kleber may not do much else on offense but you're not going to be playing 4 on 5 when he is on the floor. So if you're going to upgrade anyone, DFS is the guy. FWIW Kleber also has more size and guards Kawhi as well as anyone in the NBA.
That is an interesting theory that seems to be backed by Kamm’s data. So, who do you target and who do you let go of?
I’m trying to think of SF’s who are free agents. I come up with Duncan Robinson and Oubre off the top of my head. OPJ is a hybrid 3/4 these days. THJ is ranked as the 20th best SF by RPM. Who do you replace him with that is clearly better? If you add a SF, you probably have too many bodies when the new guy is combined with DFS, THJ and JRich. Who do you send away?
I’m in the camp that says I’d rather not start Maxi, DFS and JRich...especially Maxi and DFS. But, I find it much easier to find PF’s I like and move Maxi to backup 4/5 than to find a SF I like. I’ve also observed the teams reported interest in Gordon, Gallo Crowder and RoCo at various points in the recent past.
