Agreed. I was just responding to SBJ's suggestion of the motive of not wanting the rookie deal (big honkin' banghead) to clutter cap. It hurts! It would be absolutely Vlade level for them not to have learned from the Giannis debacle.

This is it. Cuban has made some pretty dismissive comments about the draft over the years that completely reflect the way we have treated it for the better part of his 20 year ownership. Dumping our picks purely for cap relief would be the bone headed move that would have me concerned about our ability to probably build around Luka. We literally just dumped Harrison Barnes in order to go out and do close to zero in free agency. It was nowhere near a NY Knicks move, but it was certainly a poorly conceived one. If we have to free up space, we can to that at the TDL.

The Mavs, for once, actually made the correct decision. They decided that they would not extend Barnes in the summer. So instead of running down the contract and lose him for nothing, they traded him for the 15th pick in the 2017 draft. That was good value. Unfortunately Jackson turned into a complete bust, but you do these trades a few times, you´ll nail one eventually.

Disagree, at least on the execution if not the actual trading of Barnes. Jackson was in no way shape of form good value, and ultimately had very little to do with the trade IMO. They made that trade for the same reason the Knicks traded KP for what they did (to much lesser consequence of course). That being to free up cap space for 2019 FA. In both situations, both teams could have gotten much better returns if there had not been a stipulation that the return free up cap space at the end of that season. I have less issue with actually trading Barnes, but more with the execution. I'd bet my house they would have got much better offers for Barnes in returned assets that they passed over because of the expiring contract requirement. I know hindsight is everything, and if they had snagged a top FA like Walker it would have been a great move, but the plan and execution has to be judged on the result.
