The salary cap helps somewhat but if you can just funnel money though shell companies to endorse players, you'll have a competitive advantage in that you can offer fair market value contracts with massive sweeteners to ensure you get the players you want via free agency which could offset the value of mechanism that aide in player retention like the supermax.
