There’s really no carefully staged long term strategy to be had. This was always going to be a one year rebuild. There are no future draft picks. They have some tradable assets scaled properly for the apron/hard cap era, mainly Klay’s expiring and Naji’s reasonable contract, and they have a nice TPE. But they have to move soon on all of that. There’s not going to be a full rebuild, just an effort to add the missing quality shooting guard and then tweak and develop.
But, it’s not so bad. They have a top 5 talent drafted this century going into his second year leap. Flagg should be an all star caliber player next year. They have a really nice draft pick to compliment him and do a lot of the dirty work. They have a supporting cast that if healthy is practically identical to the supporting cast around Luka’s finals squad, only deeper. While pretty much anyone would be better than Kidd, they actually probably now have a bona fide good coach. They have everything they need except health and a quality shooting guard.
