Mavericks hire Dusty May as next Head Coach

Dusty May left Michigan after two seasons and a national championship for the NBA, in part, because of the uncertainties of NIL support and the transfer portal, Michigan president Domenico Grasso said Thursday at the university’s Regents meeting. Grasso addressed the Board of Regents and those gathered at the meeting after budgets were presented by various departments. “Moving to the NBA is an opportunity for Dusty to further elevate his career. We wish him all best,” Grasso said. “His departure, however, is a bellwether of college athletics. Our current system is in dire need of clarity and equitable reform. Coach May told me that among his reasons for leaving were uncertainties and pressures involving the transfer portal and NIL support for student-athletes. He and I agree that the future of college sports is headed in the wrong direction.”
