I have explained this before, but it does seem a little contradictory so I'll try to do better.
It's not that I wanted a "win now veteran coach" as much as I was hoping to get one of the 4-5 guys on NBA coaching's top tier (as I see it, anyway). My thinking is that you jump on any opportunity to do that, regardless of where your team is on its timeline, and that such a move very likely expedites that timeline significantly. I was NOT in favor of someone like Stotts, for example, who fits your description above (probably the best name we heard who does) but isn't really an inspiring choice given where the Mavs are.
I'm just saying, when it comes to guys like Spoelstra, Nurse, Mazulla, etc, I don't think you even stop to weigh the pros and cons, you just ask them "how much do you want?" My opinion on this is similar to the opinion many on the board expressed all spring about the impending GM hire.
Also, I want to clarify that just because I'm pointing out that (imo) this hire doesn't scream win now, that's not meant as a negative. If the Mavs' decision makers think this guy is going to be a GREAT NBA coach, similar to those top tier names I mentioned above, then I'm all for them choosing to provide the opportunity and runway for him to get there. I think that's a smart investment that could pay off.
