Yeah, that was my first thought, too...but then that weird note that Ricardi/Flinely were told the Mavs "would be hiring someone else" over the weekend. But yes, the title leaves some room for speculation on the day-to-day basketball structure (thought makes it super clear who's in charge, lol).
The first thing I thought of when I saw the title of "alternate governor" was that it was aimed at Cuban. Like, even in the event Dumont is incapacitated with some emergency, the organization wants to make sure everyone on planet Earth knows that Mark Cuban is not in charge of the team.
