I love Gafford and his contract, but if Mavs are in rebuild mode, he doesn’t fit the timeline. Kuminga gets them 5 years younger and still has some upside.
I’m not saying I really want Kuminga, just connecting the dots of the GSW supposed interest in Gafford earlier and the Mavs supposed interest in Kuminga. There was also Kerr’s statement recently about missing Klay and wishing he was there. A Kuminga + Heild for Gafford + Klay can be made to work.
This would really be more of an asset management/get Klay home move than a needle mover.
If you do it for Gafford straight up, you better love Kuminga, the player. Or you think Gafford is finished physically. That contract will look really good for a contender going forward, when he gets healthy. I can easily see the Lakers give up a first for Gafford in the summer.
KP for Kuminga is an absolute no brainer asset move. I still don´t buy the Hawks keeping Young. I think the Mavs want an extra pick for taking on Young, and the Hawks refuse. So now the Hawks are shopping Young to extract value elsewhere.
It makes no logical sense for Atlanta to trade KP. For one he was the reason their rotations/defense turned to crap and the 2-8 stretch, not Young returning. So if they acquire AD for KP, and AD gets hurt they are immediately finished. With a Twin Towers set-up and Okungwu becoming another stretch big, they actually become dangerous and have some half/half injury insurance, too.
I assume that´s where we are. Mavs want Risacher + two 1st round picks or Risacher + Pelicans pick for taking on Young. Atlanta wants to give up one weaker 1st round pick.
