There are some people who are down on PJW (I think they're missing the plot pretty widely), but I think the majority of those considering this are just looking to make the roster make sense, especially in the world of the new, punitive CBA.
I'll be THRILLED if PJW is still here past this summer. It's just that they have TONS and TONS of centers and forwards, and they're missing the player some of us (myself included) believe is the most important, by far. The freaking PG.
Kyrie is not enough, even when healthy. Let me rephrase that, even a Kyire who had never sustained this injury in the first place wouldn't be nearly enough. Now, even when he's back, I doubt he'll be the same player. They NEED to replace Luka - doesn't have to be another Luka (obviously), but they need an offensive identity, and they don't have one at the moment. Like everyone, I'm hopeful that Flagg can step into those shoes and show signs of filling them more than adequately, and I think he might be more polished than some people seem to caution. But, we haven't seen it yet, and I KNOW AD/Kyrie isn't enough on offense to contend.
I just want good players on my team. Saying that you want a PG at all cost for next year is shortsighted. AD might not be here in 12 months. Flagg may prove to be a Point Forward. Give me a great young player in PJ at a bargain price and I’ll figure out the rest.
