After 19 games it looks like "the new regime" didn't manage to improve the defense. Mavs look a lot less like contender than they did last year. I don't even blame the training stuff, other than fundamentally wrong decisions about team construction (even if they didn't choose the team, they chose to manage it). We had two seasons of proof that Luka-KP-THJ doesn't equal good defense, if we put it politely. I blame overall delusion that this team is contender level. In the summer the team was selling to fans (after failing to convince Lowry and signing Bullock as the great summer addition) how they need to surround Luka with long switchable defenders who can shoot threes. True, agree. But what do we have in reality? KP and THJ which might be long but they are neither good nor particularly switchable defenders. Than we have an absolute sad story at center, whoever we play and none of them can hit a three. DFS is the only guy that could fit that initial idea. And for some reason this team keeps playing something they themselves knew in the summer it can't work. Unless they were lying. You don't need to be a basketball scientist to see (before coming to Dallas) what role players Mavs have for last 3 or more seasons, are what they are capable of doing and what not.
To ruin the Luka led offense is quite an achievement. To put a team so dysfunctional that even one of top offensive players can't make it work. I really don't know if you can understand how limited the Slovenian national team is and how great Luka made them look. They played fast, entertaining basketball with players that are light years away from NBA. Of course the team had a ceiling, but they were sure fun to watch. Mavs are slow and boring. For some reason, no one can hit an open shot, free throws included. As if the front office dysfunction made their way on court now, as Mavs look just sad on both ends. Nothing is working.
I find it disgusting that Luka is even being discussed as one of reasons as it was and is very obvious how much this team lacks the overall talent. I mean, we are looking at Sacramento (for example) and drooling over their players as each of them could look good on Mavs. This is how bad our team is. Luka is the only thing that is separating this team from being in deep lottery. Clippers without their number one star are still better than Mavs. This is how big a difference in talent level between the two teams is.
