Lebron averages 11.0 assists per game....so 9.9 potential assists NOT converted. So Luka IS first in potential assists NOT converted.....right?

Ok that’s what I thought but I’m on my phone.

Never been a fan of the potential assists stat. It's no surprise the guys ranked so high are the ones with the ball in their hands the most. You may conclude Luka has scrubs around him but what about LeBron, Harden, Westbrook, etc.?
It assumes the player is supposed to make the shot but there's no context in the actual shot being taken. It also includes if player draws a shooting foul but again maybe the foul wasn't really a foul, and so on. Pass to guy who misses a contested shot but it goes down as a "potential" assist. Pass to guy who makes a contested shot but it goes down as an actual assist. It's a failsafe stat for playmakers.

Boban for 24ur.com on Lukas impact on mavs:
Quick translation: "I have no idea about Luka. I don't know him (laughs) ... I'm kidding," the Serbian center joked at first in his typical entertainment style, then stared. "Indeed, as you said before, we play so well because of Luka. Luka holds this team together," he told our US correspondent. "He works phenomenally, I don't know, we all wonder how he succeeds. Not even we who are with him all the time don't know this. We can just take off our hats and show great respect for what he does. Wish him to stay a good guy and a good player, "Boban Marjanovic explained after the Boston-Dallas game. Boban legend...

You may conclude Luka has scrubs around him but what about LeBron, Harden, Westbrook, etc.? It's again the chicken and the egg question, that was mentioned earlier. Yes the guys that rank high there, are the ones with the ball in their hands the most. However, those very same guys, are the ones that are so exceptionally good with the ball, so considerably better than anyone else on the team, that they get green light to do it, from their respective coaches. It's no wonder that they are the ones assisting the best, since their passing skills are the best. It's the reason they find most guys open. It is also no coincidence that those teams perform well usually, since they have a superstar with that kind of ability. Our roster doesn't include one player that would be a good starter on an average NBA team, not named Luka. You can argue that Wright or Kleber have performed to that standard, but that can be discussed. Nevertheless even in the West we have a very good start. I think stats are one thing, another thing is watching the games. The Boston game. It was clear that Luka consistently found open players from start to finish, wide open looks really, looks that Cuban would have made them at a better percentage than some of our players. Those are clear cut potential assists, I'd like to have a name for those, it could be something else. They just couldn't make the shots and that costed the game, perhaps number one reason for that really. As long as we are finding so many open looks, I'm fine with the strategy, whatever it is.

He speaks like a vet and is continuing the awesome locker room culture Dirk established and putting his own twist on it. Apparently this was translated from an EU publication, and a Mavs EU twitter account posted a more accurate translation of what Luka said: "He will get better for sure. I will help him out and the team and he will for sure get better. We all will get together through this, for sure". Don't know how accurate that is but either way BOTH quotes are great to see and makes me giddy for the future. Its funny, even last year Luka could've been averaging close to 10apg instead of the 6 because of the lack of shot makers around him. This year he could be averaging close to 15!!! Mavs have to find ONE consistent shot maker around to punish defenses. THJ and Courtney Lee are not going to cut it.
