INTERVIEW CONDUCTED BY TIM MACMAHON (ESPN) WITH CREW CHIEF RODNEY MOTT FOLLOWING TONIGHT’S SACRAMENTO KINGS AT DALLAS MAVERICS GAME
May 2, 2021
QUESTION: Why was the first technical foul called on Luka Doncic?
MOTT: “The first technical foul was called after a correct call, offensive foul, and in transition he runs past me and he screams ‘hell no’ as he shakes his fist. Which is a disrespectful response to a referee, that is unsportsmanlike.”
QUESTION: Why was the second technical foul called on Doncic?
MOTT: “The second technical foul was called for throwing the ball due to frustrations of a call. Throwing the ball, the length of the court in an overt manner which is also an unsportsmanlike technical foul.”
QUESTION: “Why was that unsportsmanlike instead of delay of game?”
MOTT: “We had a time out and he takes the ball and he doesn’t throw it to the nearest official, he throws the ball the length of the court which makes it an unsportsmanlike act. The rule clearly states that you have to hand the ball to the nearest official.”
QUESTION: Why was the second technical foul called on Rick Carlisle?
MOTT: “Rick Carlisle called a timeout and then he came out on the floor and he addressed the official in a disrespectful manner using vulgarity. Which was his second technical foul so therefore he was ejected.”

So in the event of a 3 way tie, it goes to the records between the three teams. We're 3-3 against the lakers/blazers, the lakers are 2-3 and blazers 3-2 so if the blazers beat the lakers in their upcoming matchup and everyone is 3-3 then the tiebreaker will be the conference records.

Incorrect. The first tiebreaker in a three team tie is Division Winner. The second tiebreaker is head-to-head winning percentage among all teams tied. Mavs would benefit from the NBA still placing any importance on Division, when they really shouldn't.

I think 5-3 might get it done but 6-2 would feel really safe. How Utah, PHX and Denver are playing out those last games will be huge for the Mavs. If they're resting up then Portland gets a big bonus. If there is still importance for seeding purposes then a potential 3 game skid for Portland down the stretch would be nice.
The way the Mavs are going they have such a high variance for these last 8 games. Stay out of the play in please!

Lakers have to be most scared. Next five games are brutal for them, especially with their stars still coming from injury or not even playing. Also 3 B2B for both Portland and LAL.
And we know at least one of them will lose at least one game

I can't imagine the NBA would allow the LeBron Lakers to fall to the play-in game bracket. That would be a disaster. I have a feeling Lakers will get some "breaks" that help mitigate this possibility. This could be an earlier return from Covid for Schroder or an "extra" beneficial call here or there that helps them squeeze ahead of Portland. I don't think the NBA can easily "rig" it if the Lakers are terrible but if its razor-thin (game here or there, call here or there) I have a feeling the Lakers will get *just enough* luck to stay out of the play-in.

That would not ne disaster at all. That would be huge drama. Disaster would be if they wouldn't make it out of play-in.

Oh ya thank you. I actually saw that and ignored it because for some reason in my head it didn't even register that we're on track to win our division. Thank god for antiquated rules.

Just like to point out that the Lakers are already playing play-off seeding chess. Lose to the Nuggets (oops no BronBron), then beat the Clippers. That way the Lakers and Clippers virtually lock the Nuggets into the 3rd seed. Now the Lakers can focus on avoiding the 5th seed. It obviously is a crazy balancing act, but unlike the Mavs and Blazers, I don't think the Lakers give a **** about the play-in tournament. They might actual like the 7th seed road to the West finals: 1st round Jazz/Suns and then the winner of Nuggets/Mavs/Blazers.

This is pretty hot take. Not sure if you saw but Bron left last night's game early after tweaking his ankle. I also don't think Schroder getting covid has anything to do with seeding chess (they are 0-5 in the games that he has missed). Lebron came out very vocally against the play in tourney last night. The idea that they are playing with this much fire on purpose is just doesn't hold much water. Their fanbase is in full on panic mode today, no one in the right mind wants to see Steph (or Ja or Pop) in a play-in.

Man, screw the NBA. This is what you get when you inbreed all of the officiating oversight. Why would Monty McCutchen overturn techs called by Rodney Mott, who he probably officiated games with when he was still a ref?
Give the refs an enormous raise, but with the agreement that they either dissolve their union or that it has to give in to way more transparency with making poor calls public, and if you do a bad enough job you’re out.
