2020-2021 MAVS NEWS: Archived
(03-24-2021, 11:28 AM)mvossman Wrote: I feel like there is a lot of underselling of FVV right now.  Brunson will never become FVV.  He is not a good defender and very likely never will be.  FVV is an elite perimeter defender and has been since day 1.  He is not tall but due to his strength and instincts he can guard 2s and some 3s in addition to 1s.  His offensive strengths are well known.  He would be our third star and a perfect fit with Luka and KP.  There would be no doubt he starts.  FVV and JRich would probably be the best perimeter defensive combo in the league.  You could totally play them with KP/Maxi/Luka.  That would be contender lineup in my mind.  If all it takes is Brunson and a first (plus salary filler) I would pull that trigger immediately.

Yeah, so you're just much higher on VanVleet than I. You might be right. If a deal goes down and he's a Maverick, I'll be excited to hope you are.

What would you like to hear? We will have a firesale tomorrow? Smile

I think this is like best possible answer. Not saying yes and not saying no. Driving price up for the boys but still leaving open doors for any trade. "We like our boys but the offer was too good to decline".

Incoming Johnson trade confirmed.

I am not getting the fascination with FVV but he is a Donnie Nelson type of move for sure.

FVV 2 point FG% is 39%, I do not think that is a favorable stat for a high usage guard.

We need a guy that can be an ISO Scorer while also either being a high end defender or ball handler.

Derozan or someone similar makes more sense to me.

The contested 3 chart above is super interesting and in-line with my thinking about the challenges posed by playing DFS and Kleber together. Some of that is Doncic's vision & passing. Some of it is KP's gravity. But a huge part of it is team's don't believe either player will hurt them very much.

That said, the eye test tells me teams are at least guarding Kleber now. They don't leave him, at least in regular season late game situations. But when a guy is only taking 4-5 shots he's not going to do too much damage, even if he's shooting 45% on 3s.

Teams just don't guard DFS.

If the Mavs don't address one of those spots we're going to see the same thing we saw in last year's playoff run. Go back and read the game summary from that first Clippers game.

The Clips ignored DFS and Kleber and blitzed Doncic out of the gate forcing three turnovers in the first two minutes as they raced to an 18 point lead. They were extremely physical. Luka exited the game with a leg injury. KP got tossed. Just a complete S show.

I'm keeping that playoff series in mind as we get closer to the trade deadline. I don't believe the answer is to insert James Johnson as a playoff enforcer. The Mavs need to add skill to the wing/forward spot -- playmaking & shooting -- to improve upon last year's playoff run.

They will start guarding him soon, once he makes his next 50 consecutive 3pt attempts. All hail DFS!

If that happens we’ve got ourselves a 52% 3-pt shooter on our hands. But why stop there? When he knocks down 100 in a row he’ll be a 62% shooter. Eventually they won’t just be guarding him, they’ll be quintuple teaming him.

I think it’s more to the point of Maxi doesn’t shoot unless he is wide open for tge most part...the Seth Curry school of thought.

My guess is that he finally got around to reading all of @"Kammrath"’s wingspan comments. That would depress me, too.

Kamm better be with me on my THT campaign this offseason then.  He's got wingspan for days.
