J Rich will be like a rich man's Delon Wright and also similar to what the Mavs thought they were getting in Wes Matthews years ago. Elite 3D player who can score and be a secondary or tertiary playmaker.
I think Mavs will score by committee once again which shouldn't be too hard. Curry averaged under 13 points last year so it's not like we are having to replace a 20 point scorer. I would expect J Rich to be in that 13-15 range.
Burke is also a guy who can score and will be like a poor man's Seth Curry. He shot great from outside last year in a small sample size. Burke is only 28 which is around the time Curry started to figure it out. It's not hard to imagine Burke having success here in a similar way given that Rick is so good in maximizing these players.
Long term I'd like to see THJ upgraded to a more reliable scorer like Hield but he could remain a good fit. I think playing next to J Rich will help THJ get even better looks.

One of the more underrated benefits of the moves this summer will be how players can all make each other better through a shared culture. We've talked about how Richardson's shooting will improve now that he's in Dallas rather than Philly. But I also believe having guys like Richardson and Johnson in the lockerroom can also help elevate the defensive effort of everyone in Dallas.
THJ and JRich are similar in size, age, and athletic ability. Rather than simply complementing each other's strengths on the court, picture them challenging and encouraging each other to develop their weaknesses. Imagine THJ with more ballhandling and defense and JRich with more shooting. And then sprinkle in an intensity they learn from Johnson. That's the recipe for two terrific 2-way wings that you gladly lock up long-term.
Sometimes it's more effective to develop good players rather than always look to buy an expensive ready-made version off the shelf. I really like the potential long-term fit of both THJ and JRich, and I'm excited to see how they play together.

The results of the Richardson/Curry swap are very high on my watchlist for this NBA season.
Both teams really like the FIT dynamics with their star players and from watching both a lot I tend to think both teams may be right.
Carlisle is right on the money with the type of player needed to basically protect Luka so he can do what he does. Defensive, tough to take the physical and quick matchups head on and yet still an offensive threat. That Josh Richards. Throw in a black belt on the front line to take on the Marcus Morris / Montrez types and Dallas has really done a good job surrounding Doncic and KP with the right pieces on paper.
Philly on the other hand clearly needed shooting but I also think Seth also needed space to see if he can take the next step offensively. Ben Simmons isn't Doncic but he is an excellent passer, can take the tougher defensive assignment and is all too happy to pass up on shots for a better shooting teammate.
How close is Seth really to his other brother in pure offensive talent? He might be able to find out in that backcourt.
Sixers guard Seth Curry believes he and Ben Simmons ‘are kind of a perfect match’

Drop the bag Cubes. J-Rich will be Mav for years to come if for nothing else other than the fact that he is a perfect fit next to Luka.

I loved this deal at the time, and man was I wrong. This is Rondo level bad. We had arguably one of the best five shooters in the NBA. He's on a super team-friendly deal too. The plan was to improve our defense, which has not happened at all. Instead our offense is worse and J-Rich in my eyes provides absolutely nothing, Seth couldn't have done. Such a bummer. And I can't even blame the MBT. I got their reasoning, but in hindsight, top end shooting is just super super valuable and can't be made up by slightly better individual defense. Let's hope we don't look back and this trade was the beginning of the end of Luka in Dallas (ok, that's hyperbolic. Still you get the point)

It definitely looks bad so far. I haven't completely given up on Richardson yet, and even for those who have, there are still ways to use him as an asset. So, the book isn't closed yet.
If Luka leaves, the beginning of the end will have been the KP trade and contract. That's the turd in the punchbowl right now. Fixing that, either by getting star level play out of him (including defense) or by moving on from him advantageously is of paramount importance. If/when they figure out how to do that, all these other moves/players will start to fit into the puzzle more clearly, I think.

Such ridiculous snowball takes on both KP and JRich.

I think you are too down on KP's value. He is still 20/8 for the season with good offensive numbers and upside. That trade was still a great trade and I promise you that if they traded KP today they would get back a better deal than they gave up. Mavs essentially took on a bad contract, gave up 2 picks and gave up worthless players in the deal.
On paper that was a great trade. So far it hasn't worked out but we have had moments where it looked great. The injury piece is the most troubling.

I am glad we have reopened this thread. I think we have seen that the Mavs have come away from 2 off-seasons with almost nothing to show for it. Curry was the one nice piece Mavs added and we sent him away for expiring Richardson.
These other pieces Wright, JJ, Boban, Burke, WCS are not moving the needle at all. I think Mavs obsession with cap space leads them to make bad decisions. So here we are with Richardson who doesn't have a deal next year + rookies who never play.
I was a big proponent of using our picks to get players plus dump Wright/Jackson. I still wonder if the Mavs would have been better off just grabbing Danny Green for Wright/Jax + #31 and then not moving Curry. I feel like we would be a lot better.
Not using the full MLE on a good player but spitting it for mediocre players (WCS/Burke) is not helping.
People love Boban but I am so frustrated to have a situational guy like that on the team. Maybe it doesn't matter bc you can have 1 of those guys on a 15 man roster. But our big rotation sucks.

Maybe, but my point has little to nothing to do with his value.
I'm pretty flexible in my thinking (at least I think of myself that way), but one thing I'm absolutely binary about is this: to build a great defense in the NBA, you need at least a good defensive center, if not a great one.
Regardless of KP's value, he has not given me an ounce of hope this season that he'll ever become the defender I thought he'd be. And NO, I don't think simply reaching the level he has already shown on that end once again is enough. I thought he had a ways to go last season, tbh.
Just not a combination of play style and position I'm interested in pursuing, and because of the weaknesses causing that opinion, I'm equally skeptical of moving him to a different position and pairing him with a center. I LOVE his potential to pull opposing bigs out of their comfort zones and create space for the offense, and in time, I believe he can learn to deal with the counter of being guarded by smaller guys. But, the defense...makes any time spent a waste.
At this point, I just flat out believe the Mavs are spinning their wheels with this dude. He'd have to play better than he ever has as a Maverick for about 50 straight games to change my mind. I'm done. Richardson, on the other hand, I'm still hoping fits better as time passes. But KP? I've seen enough.

Only problem I have with this take is the thinking that this is who he have in KP and JRich. Long lasting injury that keeps him from developing his game is a legit concern with KP, if he can just finish out the season healthy, I believe we see a big step up from him next year. Honestly, I’m beginning to question RC more than KP or JRich.

This is an optimistic way of thinking that I would absolutely ride for (I'm a huge believer in player development and the fact that it can happen long after fans believe - well into the 30's). Only, I will be shocked if Porzingis ever has an actual healthy off-season again.
Richardson: absolutely agree. He should look better here as time goes by and he and the team become more familiar with each other. But, that doesn't mean I'm scared to move on from him. Not looking to dump him, but I've seen enough to know he's not a cornerstone piece, either, no matter how much he develops. He's on the same level as Kleber/DFS.

I think we are on the same page that KP isn't a fit altho where we diverge is I think a) KP will continue to improve and b) has a lot more value in the league than you think he does. Anyone who believes that GMs view KP as a negative asset is nuts. He is not a negative asset. Does that mean every GM wants him on their team? No but KP will has value if Mavs trade him. It doesn't mean the Mavs are going to get some amazing package that will blow us away but I think Mavs can get a good return for him. Wiseman is still my favorite choice honestly.

MUSIC TO MY EARS! I sure hope you're right, and if so, I can't wait to see what they get for him so we can start building an actual contender.
