For the record:
I almost 100% support how the Mavs approach team-building and give them the benefit of the doubt in almost every instance....
...BUT how they often treat the draft pisses me off. And I do not understand how they do not seem to learn from their mistakes there over the years.

I agree in a general sense. I’m just not sure this is the year to get pissed off about it.

It is. I REALLY like a lot of these late first round prospects. Time will tell if I'm right or wrong.

Yeah, because they're going to have so many draft picks this high in the next seven years.

The absence of pics in future drafts doesn’t make this draft a good one. Maybe all the speculation is wrong and it IS a good one, but that doesn’t mean they’ll hit with #18.
Either way, there’s nothing we can do but hope for the best. I don’t think the franchise will live or die with this year’s 18th pick. I’ll reserve judgement until i see what they do, tbh.

I'm on Team Keep #18, but I expect to be disappointed. The most Mavs-like move I can think of would be to trade down in the draft to create cap space to sign the guy we missed out on because we traded down in the draft.

One question: If we trade Wright/Jackson/18 for Schroder, do we get his rights in '21 ?
This way, we could clear cap space for a '21 FA and after we sign one (hopefully one of the better ones) we could use the rights to go over the cap and sign Schroder/THJ (if Cuban is willing to pay). Obviously there's a risk he leaves for a better offer while we chase those big fish.
Luka/KP/'21 FA/THJ/Schroder/DFS/Curry/Maxi is a pretty darn good 8-man rotation.

I very much hope Schroder would be the target - I'd be out on nearly anyone else - but you have to renounce cap holds and Bird rights to sign free agents. In other words, it would be FA and not THJ/Schroder, or THJ/Schroder and not the FA, not both.

Yes, you’d have his rights, but you’d have to renounce them to sign a max free agent. They would need to rid themselves of the cap hold. So, re-signing him would potentially be a fall back, but if they land someone like Giannis, he and THJ would both be gone (unless one of them wants to sign for the room MLE).
Scott beat me to it.

That was another name I considered. Just not sure what OKC will do. The answer is yes, you would have his Bird rights. His cap hold in 21 would be $23 million. You would have to forego those rights in order to sign a max guy and as you say, there is no real reason for Schroder to hang around waiting (see Chandler, Tyson).

Perhaps applies to the second go-round (I can't remember), but it doesn't have anything to do with 2011. He walked because we offered him a one-year deal in order to go after DWill and Dwight in 2012 instead of giving him the multiyear deal that he and all of the Mavs' fans except Fifteenth deserved in order for that team to defend their title - and for Dirk to have the best center fit in the entire league next to him for the next few years.

I would not mind moving down to # 21 if we could get 2 of the 4 Philly 2nd round picks. One would have to be either 34 or 36 and the other would have to be # 49. Then I would offer MIL the 31st and 34/36 pick for the 24th.

That would be fine, but that's not what's being discussed. It's to clear the books for a rental.
When does JRich expire? If 2021, then JRich/21/36 for Curry/18?

I actually like the idea of adding Richardson to the team. In fact Gordon and JRich would be my 1st and 2nd preferred trade choices. 3rd being an opt-in or S&T Grant.

Wait, what? What am I getting accused of here?
Could someone back this bus up that's on top of me for no reason that I can reckon?

This is one of the ONLY scenarios I support trading #18. Schroder checks a ton of boxes (if he has matured) that are needed on this team.

Am I wrong in remembering you as the ringleader of defending the '11 offseason? If I'm wrong, my humble apologies.

The only two '21-expiring guys I can think of whom I could stomach in trade for 18 are Schroder and OPJ. I think 18 is indeed necessary to get the latter, especially if they're pretending to try to get good this year.
Edit: add Lowry, Gobert, Fournier, and Oubre. JRich has a player option for '21. Hmmmm.....

I spent years pointing out how evil the 2011 offseason was.
