Trade & Free Agency 2026/2027
For some of our capologists...

Where is DAL currently at vs whatever apron restriction they have? Just wondering how late they would have to wait after the TDL to convert one of the 2-way contracts into a regular league deal, assuming that they would likely have to cut a current contract.

Surplus? Definitely not, imo, especially since May has already experimented with playing up to 3 of them at time (which is AMAZING).

I'd say they're still lacking, if anything, especially with De Larrea sidelined.

What they have too many of is centers. With Gafford playing this well...if they expect that to continue, I'd say Cisse is the guy who needs to go. Or maybe they can find a Martin trade, finally.

They don't need to do anything yet, so it's not really a concern at the moment. I bet they can make it to the trade deadline with the roster as is.

Mavs are $11M below the Tax line. That’s the number that matters. They are hard capped at Apron 1, so they technically have $18M to work with (but won’t).

Two sizable exceptions:
MLE $12M
AD TE $7M

Tried to keep it simple… Smile

According to Spotrac..
Dallas is $11.0976 million below the TAX
$18.34 million below the 1st Apron
$31.011 below the 2nd Apron

They will be loathe to go into the TAX unless you are talking about adding one of the top 5-10 players in the deal.
So there is an 11 million dollar window to make deals, but they would probably like a 2 million dollar hedge from that in case they have to sign minimum players in the event of catastrophic injuries.
that said my guess is they will be willing to add 7 million until December 15 (FAs signed become trade eligible) at some point they would be willing to bump the add up to 8-9 million until the end of the trade deadline.
One more point of interest is that they might not add through trade IF they still have an exception with which they can claim a FA after the Trade Deadline.

Naz Reid was benched in the last game in Charlotte in the 2nd quarter (he was playing well) and is on the outs. Would you consider:

Gafford and Martin for Reid?
Lively and Martin for Reid?
Max and Martin for Reid?

He'd definitely be a great floor spacer. Plus this would open a roster spot to possibly convert Clayton if necessary.

Charlotte definitely has the cap space and currently only have 14 on the roster.

Edit: after seeing his contract I'd probably want at least some 2nds thrown in.

How was he benched if he was playing well? He wasn't doing something that he was supposed to be doing.

That whole thing was some kind of red flag to me.

It's still a mystery to me. But I literally have never heard of a player taken out because "he didn't meet our standards." We don't know what "standard" refers to. I'm not sure I want to trade for a guy who is not meeting the coach's standards.

But even then, I'm not sure we really need another big guy on the floor. He seems redundant is some ways. I realize he's a talent from the perimeter but I wouldn't be going out of my way to get him now.

He'd be redundant if Gafford/Lively weren't outgoing. I agree that the Mavs' chemistry seems amazing right now. But I think it would be amazing to have a center combo where one was more offensive and the other defensive. Not to mention Morez being a part of it. Anyway, I hope M&M continue to be opportunistic.

Jon Krawcynski: The Wolves will not be picking up the option on Cody Williams. From what I understand, they’ve really liked what they’ve seen from him so far. This is much more about finances. He would’ve been due $6M+ next season, and that’s a lot to squeeze into a very tight cap situation The Timberwolves are exercising the contract options for next season on TJ Shannon and Joan Beringer, a source tells @TheAthletic. No surprise there. Both have played very well early in this season and are big parts of the Wolves' future.

Tim MacMahon: If Presti does elect to pursue a deal, multiple executives identified the New Orleans Pelicans as a potential trade partner with defensive stopper Herb Jones or 3-and-D wing Trey Murphy III as possible targets. The Pelicans have set a high asking price for Murphy in recent transaction cycles, making it clear that multiple first-round picks would need to be involved to pique their interest, according to league sources. Presti has a deep war chest of future first-round picks, but that has been true for years. He never engaged in discussions for that type of blockbuster deal while deliberately building this roster. "That's not who they are," one Eastern Conference executive said. "I think they'd rather play their young guys and see what they have."

The Oklahoma City Thunder plan to sign Ochai Agbaji, league sources told @hoopshype. Agbaji has averaged 7.2 points in four NBA seasons with the Utah Jazz, Toronto Raptors, and Brooklyn Nets. Agbaji was most recently with the New York Knicks in training camp.

I think you're getting ahead of yourself thinking he's trade bait. He just got there. Pretty sure they'll work things out. My question is what kind of standard has Charlotte set? They haven't had a history of winning consistently.

I think Detroit is another team salivating over getting Kyrie Irving. They're off to a great start. I think the Mavericks have a chance to get some real assets back in return for a player that's been good for them."

I bet if the first sentence from the other GM doesn't start with 5 first round picks they get cussed, hung up on, and their number blocked....
Josh Green is a top 5 Mavs player...

I don’t think we need picks the most, since Cooper is already so good - you can win with him in the next couple of seasons.

Young, established players with room for further improvement are the best targets - players in the likes of a Wagner. Just as an random example.

Topic is another interesting "bust". Basically never had the chance to play in the NBA. Torn ACL prevented him from playing in his rookie season (24/25) and he missed most of 25/26 after he was diagnosed with testicular cancer. Still only 21 years old.
Not sure if I would pull the trigger but if OKC is looking for a more reliable rotation player that can help them this season Christie would be a salary match that keeps them under the 2nd apron.
