Marc Stein: "I imagine that Herb Jones's name will be suggested as a dream target. And look again, the Thunder have picks galore to offer because teams have been trying to pilfer for Herb Jones from the Pelicans for ages now. And New Orleans last season basically was telling teams, trade Trey Murphy and Herb Jones if they are not untouchable, it's pretty dang close. You're going to have to offer us three firsts for Trey Murphy or two firsts for Herb Jones."

At the time when he is owed 80 mil over next four years while they relagated him to a bench role of 17 mpg. He is averaging 3.5 ppg on 36 % shooting (overall, not just three pointers!). I know OKC is in a tough spot, but I don't see them coughing up 2 FRPs for such a player on such a contract.

TBF he is still young and only a couple years removed from being All-defensive first team and 5th in DPOY. He just really can’t shoot, and that season where he shot great is looking more like an abberation.

I read the other day is New Orleans is using the previous GM of the Bulls playbook. Hold on to assets due to outlandish demands while your team stinks only to sell of that player at a deep discount down the road.

Will be really interesting what happens with AD. It feels like Washington is a rental. The question is will he go to a contender? What does his next co tract look like?

i would like to get a PG here long term and Black would be my choice, but i am not sure of the price tag, i personally would be willing to take on Suggs if it helped with a deal but i consider him a negative contract that the Magic might prefer to unload. Thoughts on how close a Black and Suggs for Kyrie and Christie might work?

BTW, I completely and absolutely retract my drum beating for the PJ-for-Scoot trade. One, we have enough capable guards between Kai, Sergio, Max, Sasser, and WCJ. Two, PJ looks amazingly quintessential moving forward - part of a big four with Coop, Kai, and ZR. If he keeps this up, he’ll have a better year than even the ‘24 run.
The only trade I would want to see the Mavs make this year would be if there’s a way to upgrade Max sending out him and one or two of our deep depth guys. Right now, he’s the only traditional two guard we have, but he looks like the glaring weakest link in terms of role on the team now.

Risacher, Aldama, Larry, Sasser, Tarik were all acquired as a result of that trade, in addition to the tax and cap sheet benefits.

I get what you're saying, but I think his role on the team is an important one. He's a high volume 3PT shooter. A good one. Probably the only other player on the roster besides Kyrie that provides any real gravity. Pulling his defender away from the paint, so that Coop and Co. can score all those paint points they've been getting.

He definitely has a role, but it may not be long term starter.

Man I feel dirty praising him so much the last two days. I guess it would depend on who the upgrade is. I do wonder if Max picks up his option next year, that could play into the decision making too.

He's started every game but only played "starter" minutes once. I think May has it figured out right now with the Max/ZR split. I'm sure it will change back and forth with how each guy is playing/performing as the season goes on.

Rather, Sergio and the little guards have taken those minutes, while ZR has been in the front court as he ought to be.

Most of the awesome Risacher minutes with Flagg have come at the 3 and 4, respectively, as one might predict. They have even done a fair amount of PJW at the 5 to accommodate this (and I've loved it). Christie's competition is with the guys who handle the ball, tbh, and there's a lot of it. Sasser and Clayton Jr both look really good to me, so far.

That doesn't paint the whole picture has Christie would lose out in the ball handling competition, but gains ground/surpasses on shooting splits and defense or another way of saying I don't think his minutes are in any jeopardy.

I'm not sure that is true with Sasser, who has very similar per 36 three point shooting numbers and is a quality defender. The only thing Max has over Sasser is size and a history of playing bigger minutes.

Yeah, I'm not arguing that. I'm just saying that his minutes at the 2 seem (to me) to be increasing/decreasing based on the desire/need to get more ball-handling in the game. I guess you could make the point that ZR is preventing Christie from sliding down to the 3 in some sort of 3-guard lineup. Speaking of that, May threw a 3-ball-handler lineup out there for a few minutes against Miami and I was giddy. Loved it! |
