I think they're going to try and scramble the game with their defense so that shot creation in the half-court will be less important. That might come back to bite them in the play offs. More guys will play in an effort to keep the pressure on. That's what it looked like to me in Summer League.

"Mavericks president Masai Ujiri has added a pair of former Raptors staffers to his front office, having hired Matt Redfield as an assistant general manager and Justin Serresse as a global scout, Stein reports. The Mavs have also hired Blaise Ross from the league office to be the club’s senior director of salary cap and strategy and promoted DJ Sewell to manager of salary cap and strategy, Stein adds.

Stein provides one more update on the Mavericks, writing that Nate Mitchell will soon be announced as the head coach of the Texas Legends, Dallas’ G League affiliate. Stein said in July that Mitchell was a “prime candidate” for that job."

So Kyrie, Flagg, and lively were all at duke with a ton of other pros. There is a pic of Lively lifting weights and also talking to players on the court. Recently there was a picture of him in the weight room with Tyson Chandler. Unless I missed it though, there has not been any pictures of him playing basketball. So either they are being extremely secretive or he is not playing on the court yet with a month before camp opens.

I am not surprised, because I don't think there has been anything whatsoever re Lively that has said he would be ready to play when the season opens - much less that he would be playing more than a month sooner than that. Instead, we have had a steady stream of non-answer "answers" to the question of when he will be ready. He's in the training room every day, he's working hard, etc, it's nebulous vagueness each time where team mouthpieces want to make it sound like he's just a half-step away from a full-speed return, yet really saying nothing of the kind.

From that, I have formed the belief that any expectations on him are going to be a setup for disappointment. Maybe he returns sometime, and maybe he plays in games from time to time, but I am just not expecting anything remotely team-changing.

I am not sure I agree with this.  I think to get the most out of both, they need to be able to play together...a lot.

Right now though, Lively needs to prove he can get and stay healthy and also be productive without Luka.  That is #1.    If the answer is no to either of these, that will hurt.   I think Lively is one of the handful of guys on the current roster who I feel confident could finish games on good teams and impact those games.   If Lively can't stay on the court, that puts a big hit on the rebuild stage imo.

I told myself I would keep quiet on Lively as he just has not been healthy.    He is such a wild card for this team though.    I am really interested to see what May does with him.   I think Mara is more skilled, but look at Mara's production prior to last year.   He had glimpses but no one thought he was a lottery pick when he transferred to Michican.  I think Lively has some of the skills that May really highlighted with Mara.

Happy I chose the monthly NFL league pass again - let’s see if the Cowboys can turn it around and make me buy another month...

That’s why over the last 10 years I have looked to Peter LaFleur for my Cowboys wisdom: “I’ve found that if you have a goal, you might not reach it. But if you don’t have one, you are never disappointed. And I got to tell you, it feels phenomenal!”

This is why I quit watching the Cowboys well into the Jerry Jones era--after watching them for more than--50 years.

All I have left to watch now are the Dallas Mavs.

I remember standing in line outside of the Cowboys offices on Central Expressway in 1979, peering through the windows at the TVs as they came back from some big deficit against the Redskins, and then buying tickets to a playoff game. There was a mighty cheer!

The CP hire was pretty progressive of the Cowboys so the hope is understandable, at least that's how I looked at it.  They may yet turn things around, but the opening game performance would have ranked in the bottom five if it occurred last year which was an all time bad defense.  Tons of new players, new coaching staff, same results.  Special teams is also a dumpster fire and they really didn't address that part of our staff either.  It's just deflating.  Schotty seems like a good dude, but I'm not sure he's a good HC and all the doubts we had about him when he was initially hired are starting to bear fruit.

The season does seem kind of cursed though with Tyler Smith getting thumb surgery a week before the opener and Malik Davis (who was so often overlooked) suffering a career threatening injury after finally earning a backup role and a mere 3 days before the opener. Seriously bummed about Malik.

Where have all those good times gone? Made me think about sitting on my bed in my room as a kid sobbing after the Montana to Clark TD in the 1981 season NFC championship. Has been a long time since I’ve felt that way about the boys thanks to Jerrah. Probably will never feel that way again, honestly. Nico almost trashed my Mavs fandom, too……..almost…

TBH, I've been numb to the Cowboys for years now. The cycle is to underperform, then hype the offseason with coaching changes/trades/FA signings/draft picks to raise expectations, keeping ticket and merch sales flowing only to just miss the playoffs or crash/burn in the first round. Then start the cycle over again. I haven't felt like they were a lock in any game for years now.

Turning back to basketball, the Mavs have produced a LOT of their own drama the last few years, since Luka's arrival actually. I want to believe in the young crew the MBT Mark III has assembled, but I'm skeptical enough to not get too emotionally attached until they start showing results. Cautiously hopeful, I guess.
