If I am reading correctly ....

Mavs players are not participating in the Euro tournaments this summer, which imo is explained by the fact their starting camp schedule is much earlier than the rest of the NBA. That is because they have been given special permission to do so, which derives from starting the season in China a bit ahead, and the impact that will occur due to the massive travel and odd schedule.

The point being, all the Mavs may already be in Dallas, starting the camp-before-camp that the NBA allows, with May and friends working with them on team stuff.

Already didn't want to be saddled with a $90M contract to a SG who's not that great a shooter (33% is underwater on 3s, so he's definitely not the much-needed floor spacer) and is an inefficient scorer (54% TS%) and whose defense is awful. He's makes up for the inefficiency by shooting a ton (usage over 30%) which gets him his points but makes an even bigger negative drain in the efficiency of your entire offense. 

The fact that he's also damaged goods is just more reason for me NOT to want to bother.

Rival teams, however, continue to wonder aloud about how firmly Dallas will stick to that stance once the season begins and the next in-season trade deadline on Feb. 11 gradually approaches.

Very reasonable assumption. Not that I think Stein is in the know from a Mavs FO perspective. He can only say the same thing in so many different ways. Eventually, he'll need to buddy up with the new guys... Less guessing and more knowing.


For me personally, I'd put a Kyrie TDL deal at about 40%. It's high, I know. I just see a world where the Mavs aren't that good. Brutal opening schedule. And Kai wants to get to a more veteran team -- with a chance to win -- and ink a new deal next summer with that squad.

Houston makes some sense. 76ers. Pistons. Magic. Just to name a few.

I sure hope they keep him. Players who can score and create and handle the ball and do so at an efficient level are really hard to get. Not so long ago they had 3 at once (Luka, Brunson, and Dinwiddie) and frittered it all away. Ugh. Then they had both Luka and Kyrie. Not anymore. Need to keep the focus on keeping and building around those who can do things so many others can't. 

Now it's Kyrie. And maybe DeLarrea can fill a slot. But they need another if they can find one (not less).

Sometimes you can find this player with a lesser draft pick. That's a path for later on. But bringing in 2-ways to try to find a guy who can work his way into this is an avenue. It feels odd to me that as deep as the Mavs are with their F/wing players, their 2-ways are all in that category as well, with no C or PG prospects at all. I can understand the C position if they feel like Aldama, Morez, and maybe even PJ can provide some minutes if needed, but it's hard to understand what they are doing with PG.

Would you be okay if the MBT decide to keep him past the TDL... opting not to get anything in return, and then Kyrie opts out and resigns elsewhere next summer.? I don't think that's a real concern (although I am certain some will make it out to be a thing). It has appeared that Kyrie has been working WITH the Mavs. I think they talk. If he wants out, he will let them know. Even in that scenario, Mavs can get compensation by trade.

But I believe Kyrie likes it here, has an elder guru role, and doesn't have the drama he had to deal with elsewhere. I think that is way higher on his priority list than some supposed desire to ring chase. And he already has his ring fwiw. I can see him opting out of his PO to sign a new DAL deal (with lots of alarm-filled articles then getting written about how screwed the Mavs are) followed by a multi-year deal with a No Trade provision. As I said, I think he really likes it here.

The Kyrie and Mavs dynamic will be interesting to watch.  They appear to be aligned now, but what happens if this is a 30plus win team next year?

I personally think despite the Mavs leadership saying they don't want to skip steps in building around Flagg that they may have a faster timeline than we expect.  Especially if Flagg makes a leap.   I don't think I would be on board with that as I am not sure we could compete against OKC and SA anytime soon.   I just have a sneaky suspicion if they intend to keep Kyrie they may be searching for that surprising move.  Their moves and non moves this summer sort of hint to that.  

The K. Leonard trade rumor this summer was really surprising.   Zach Lowe thought that there was nothing there, but I am keeping my ears perked for something like that hitting in the next 6 months.
