MAVS NEWS:
(07-28-2026, 01:08 PM)michaeltex Wrote: On a side note...

Just watched a YouTube video that talked about Flagg having grown two inches in the last year and he now measures at 6'11".

Is this true? Has it been mentioned before and I just missed it? Same video also claimed Stephon Castle has put on 2".

Just checking.

I actually saw yesterday he had grown 3" and was 7 foot now, I tried to verify if it is true or just made up click headlines.  I have tried looking for resent pics of him with say Lively who supposed is now 7 3 or anyone 6 11 but haven't found one yet. I do wonder if getting longer adds anything to his game or will it actually lose some of his quickness, plus I don't want to see him as a center anytime soon.

Could not agree more. He's almost become a folktale of sorts, because we're not used to seeing him around. I said year 2, and in the small sample size year 3, that he (gasp) actually regressed from his rookie year. Now he's missed even more development time. Doesn't have Luka setting him up. Hasn't played with Coop, unless you count the whopping 84 minutes last year. A lot of factors, and I haven't even mentioned the actual injury and how that might affect his on-court play.

I try to stay positive about all things Mavs. These guys are incredible basketball players at the end of the day. And in Lively's case, an incredible human being. It's all relative though. He's a very limited offensive Big and a very good defensive one. 'Potential' is still what he is. How much does a front office pay for that? Do they agree that he hasn't actually improved since year 1, maybe even regressed some?

The top 5 center stuff is not even in the equation for me?? He would have to develop an offensive game beyond any of our imaginations to join that discussion.

He's a real talented young player that has shown some brilliant flashes and a nice playoff run. There's a lot of stuff that he isn't and reliable is at the top of that list unfortunately.

Yeah, unfortunately I don't ascribe any value to Lively.  Until he proves he can stay healthy he's just a guy.

So, what do we want to set as the over/under for Lively's starting number.  I nominate $17.5mm (just over what Gafford makes this next season).  I'll take the over. Maybe there is a disconnect between what the team is likely to do and what we as fans would do if we were making the decision.

DS, you're a very smart guy who makes a lot of great contributions to the board. But this take is pretty crazy from my pov.

That might be the number if he has a fully healthy season.  I don't see how you can make that commitment to a guy with his injury history right now.

13M is the magic number.

Otherwise, bet on your healthy.

Jesus Christ.  He has a team option for $7.2 million next year. He's not even worth that if he can't stay on the floor.

am I missing something here?

I´d give him a frontloaded 36/3 (14/12/10) with a player option in year three, but a performance out clause for Mavs after year two. If he breaks down completely he gets a life-altering $26M. If he is fully healthy and performs accordingly, he can opt out and Mavs can give him a new deal.

Since "we fans" dont all agree, the Mavs certainly have a disconnect with some who are opining on this. But who knows, their disconnect in thinking about Lively might not be with who you think.

I think the softening NBA revenues are already making it less likely for them to want to take the wild financial swings. So I think they will tend to be way more conservative than some might expect (see Watson, Peyton). That's my guess on their thinking on Lively.

I hope he signs for the over just for the fun of the handwringing. Then when he is back on the court crushing it, people will scream for joy like little girls at a Taylor Swift concert.

We fans have very limited knowledge about his recovery and prognosis. The team has far more.

Their negotiations will be based on real knowledge, while ours are purely speculative.

I'm going way under on this one and that would be a horrible contract if he continues to be injury plagued. I'm going to say almost no chance he gets 17.5 a year.

So how does a swap of a swap work? OKC and San Antonio have swap rights for Dallas in the future. Both appear to destined to be late first round picks. If Dallas made a swap in those years with another team, how does that work?

For instance, team x winds up with the 8th pick, Dallas winds up at 16, and OKC is 30. OKC would get the 8th pick in this scenario right?

It would be pretty straightforward. OKC gets the better of their pick and DAL.

Say the Mavs did another swap that year. MIA for example. Then MIA would get the the worst of OKC/DAL if it was a better pick than their own. Otherwise, the swap isn’t executed.

OKC gets best of Own/DAL
MIA gets best of Own/pick DAL ended up with.
DAL gets the worst of the bunch.

Same way in reverse.

OKC gets best of Own/DAL
DAL gets best of the pick they ended up with from above/MIA
MIA gets the worst of the bunch.

I mean, I would be for a cheap Lively extension, but just ask Devin Harris about foot issues in the NBA.

Issue isn't whether Lively can be on the court...the bigger one is will he ever be like he was his rookie year again.

For sure the Mavs FO know better Lively situation but foot injury for a big is scary. Very scary.

I think can't be a bad idea flip him and let another team make the decision.

Rez and Cisse aren't bad as future pair of Cs.
