Trade & Free Agency 2026/2027

It is that part of the offseason where I watch highlights of Marshall, PJ and Gafford and think, maybe we can keep them.    Ha.   I think one of them will be traded.  Not sure which one.  Two may be more ideal with three (or 4) forwards added to the roster the last few weeks.    Although, I am not sure who I want back in return for any of them.    Ideally it is a guard, but I am having trouble finding players who I think fit the new leadership's vision.

Whether they are right or not is a different story, but I like how decisive they are in going after guys they like.  Even if it leaves the roster even more lopsided currently.   I think the old leadership would have been stuck waiting to trade a player before other moves were made.

If you put Luka in this roster we are contender from now.

Anyway i don't have and opinion right now about Luka, i loved him but i like so much this roster and our future.

It is just not something I really want to think about currently.  Luka has plans of pulling the Lakers into a contender and that is where his focus should be.   

The Mavs are just looking to get this thing back on track.   They Mavs should not be spending their time trying to put them in a position for Luka in two years with their moves.    If those stars align, we are sure to discuss it in the future.  Personally, I don't think it happens.   I don't want to spend my time hoping for it to happen either.

Two things:
1) Every thing the Mavs have done this offseason has crashed out into the open out of thin air, without warning. “No smoke,” for this front office is as good as smoke, tbh. Come on. You aren’t smarter than this - you’re *way* smarter than this.
2) You do look at this roster and see a dearth of guards, right? If not, then putting #1 and #2 together, I might consider a wellness check on you.

What I see is a dearth of playmaking, shooting, self creation and point of attack defense.  Mathurin does not check a lot of those boxes.  I don't think the goal is to bring in any guard regardless of fit.

At this point I just want some news about either LeBron or Kawhi Leonard. It feels like everything that can happen before those situations are resolved has happened. No idea if the Mavs are directly held up by their situations, but many teams are, and at the very least the Mavs might be held up in the trickle down effect, even with smaller things they're looking at. 

I have no idea what to expect, but it doesn't feel like they're "done" to me. Dan made a great point about a week ago about how we always want them to do more at the end of the summer and we're always slow to recognize that "this is it." I remember all those summers and agree with this sentiment. But, this is a new front office in a unique situation, trying to transition away from a team built around Luka (without Luka, yuck), and like 3 days after he said that, *BANG*...Risacher trade. A trade with an OUTGOING guard, no less. And then there's fact that they have 16 at least partially guaranteed contracts on the books with some of their own free agents still up for grabs to consider. When was the last time we heard anything about Brandon Williams or Dwight Powell? I don't know if they want to bring either of them back (I'd guess not), but they'll both have jobs somewhere, I'd imagine. 

Idk..it just feels like there's at least one more move coming.

I would be more than happy to take a low cost gamble on Scoot, but I'm not sure this FO is interested.  As I think somebody on here pointed out, Schmitz made it his primary goal to get Avdija and hand him the keys while Scoot was on the roster.  That does not seem like a ringing endorsement.

I think he checks a lot more of those boxes than you do. Don't get me wrong - I understand your point and agree, but RIGHT NOW they're a Kyrie injury away from potentially being almost as offensively challenged as they were last season. Probably not that bad, because Flagg will be better, they have more shooting (still remains to be seen how much that improved spacing will actually get into GAMES) and May seems to understand that he needs to actually design an offense that plays to the strengths of his team, but...idk. I think a guy who can get good shots off even when the defense is focused on him is ALWAYS helpful, offensively. More so in the Mavs' situation. 

I actually think adding Mathruin would increase the amount of wins I'd expect, personally. Were they to trade for him, I might end up thinking it's the most likely to manifest itself into a better team THIS SEASON of all the summer moves.

There has to be at least one move coming, even if its just buying out Klay.  But I agree.  It seems like there will be something bigger than that.  Maybe one of those consolidation trades for assets Dan was talking about.  Everything else they have done has pointed to rebuild.  That would be the final piece.

That sounds like an “agree to disagree” thing more than anything else.

Given what we’ve seen in contracts for the 6th man microwaves this summer, Mathurin, who has the advantage over most of those of being younger, is probably worth $14-15 M AAV. He wants a lot more than that. If the Watson rumor of returning to Denver on the cheap is real, then the Mavs would have competition from the Clipps themselves, who would need a lot of compensation to not just sign him themselves. That’s the thing with an RFA sign and trade - overpay to convince the player, give up way too many assets to please the incumbent team. Plus I’ve already said Mathurin is a fetch that isn’t happening due to the Kawhi delay and probable outcome. 

I think Ben would fit the profile, plan, and roster just fine at $15 mil per. Almost certainly not happening.

Re: KL wrt the Queen Jane and Kawhi holdups - the drama queen will probably make a decision and deal prior to the end of next week. I don’t see the Kawhi thing as resolved until mid-September. Seriously. And that’s optimistic.

He’s pretty much the last young player who would fit. Like I said, Mathurin is unlikely. In contradiction to KL, if it ain’t one of those two, then Occam’s razor points like a catastrophic avalanche towards that the plan is to cut Klay, sign Seva to a 2-way, and roll with the current roster.

That, or they trade for yet another forward.

Or, their target is some young guard out there who has not been mentioned by anyone on this board. And with the “no smoke for M&M” rule, we can speculate, but no one really knows but them.

It has to be resolved soon. AT LEAST two franchises, TOR and LAC, or stuck in their tracks until it gets resolved.

I don't know what I expect "soon" to be, exactly, but mid-September would be ridiculous.

The fact that it’s taken this long is already ridiculous, and projections are getting less and less optimistic.

It's possible Mathurin will improve the team due to limited offense (Indiana was better when he was off the court all 4 seasons) but honestly I would rather watch the team develop than watching Mathurin get his.

We are probably spending too much time on a guy that likely won't be here.  I will worry about it if they actually trade for him.
