Trade & Free Agency 2026/2027
(07-21-2026, 08:31 AM)Chicagojk Wrote: Short answer is we don't know.   Myself and others are maybe assuming he keeps his two way, but that can change quickly.  One of the Mavs twitter guys speculated this morning that there is a rumor he is exploring overseas opportunities.    I don't know if that guy has any sources.  It would be an odd decision if he turns down a two way.  Or maybe Mavs have told him they have other plans for his two way and are giving him time to find a landing spot.   Might be easier to have some negotiating power if you still have your two way???

I believe nothing is guaranteed with a two way.   So even though he signed a two year for last year and this year, the team can cut bait whenever they want.

So, that's it. He's signed for another year. That's what I didn't know, thanks.

Yeah I agree - that doesn't mean he's going to get that second year. We'll see.

I'm still on team Mathur-IN, as people probably know. I don't think that random post he liked means anything (still fun, I'm glad it was posted), but I do think it makes some sense and would be fine with it if it happened.

He fits into the youth of all the other additions. He doesn't solve the creation issue we've discussed in any kind of PG sense, but he DOES create offense. Really well, actually. He'd probably be the best iso scorer on the team not named Kyrie Irving the second his plane landed. This creates help defense and defensive rotations or even double teams, and is a step in the right direction, from my seat. He has a chance to improve in the areas folks complain about, and all of this in the package of a size and position that's quite underrepresented on the roster at the moment. I'd still have both Mathurin and Sharpe pretty high on my list for this summer, despite neither being the PG many of us wanted.

I think I'd probably still start Chirstie with Kyrie and Flagg for spacing, but as a 6th man with ability to be the driving force of bench offenses, Mathruin is one of the few moves left this summer that could actually move the needle, imho.

Yeah, more evidence that KL, for all of his great contributions and basketball knowledge, doesn't understand who Cooper Flagg is yet.

You can make an argument that Naji is a better ISO scorer.  He actually takes more unassisted shots by percentage and has a better TS% while Mathurin has a little more volume.  All the numbers are close, but Naji is a much better defender.  I get that Mathurin is younger, but I would rather just keep Naji than pay a premium for Mathurin.

I would be open to Mathurin, but my issue is that, unless Max is outgoing, for purposes of developing guys like Sasser (who, to be fair, is pretty good as he is) and especially Sergio (and maybe even Seva), as much as we whinge about imbalance and the lack of guards, there's only room for one big-minute guard. So in that event, I would rather see Scoot here than Mathurin. As I have hinted at, I see Sergio's main path to the floor this year as being a two, not a lead yet due to his handle issues. Therefore, Scoot wouldn't block him this year, and would provide solid starter minutes for if/when Kyrie is injured.

If the Mavs were to, say, trade PJ for Scoot and Gafford for Mathurin and waive Klay, and assuming they traded Max for a first rounder, I would see the rotation as something like

Kyrie-Scoot-Sasser
Mathurin-Sergio-Seva
Naji-Risacher-Tarik-Martin
Flagg-Aldama
Morez-Lively-Cisse

To me, that's actually a decent playoff team. If the young guys developed as hoped, perhaps eventually a contender.

That's essentially Dan's trade outline from yesterday. However, this one does not include Podziemski

Mathurin is a nice player but he’s a scorer who needs the ball. Carlisle didn’t want him on the floor to start games next to Halliburton and Siakam.  He wouldn’t fit with Kyrie and Flagg either. There is only one ball. If he’s your 6th man, fine, but don’t take touches away from your most efficient players.

I would be looking at trades that include picks at this point. Some kind of 2-for-1 with picks would be ideal. The trade with GS as outlined above almost has my interest, but it's still short for the Mavs. If there's not another player coming in, there needs to be more picks.

OK, then throw Sergio to the wolves - and let him average 15 assists per game (and, sadly, probably 6-7 TOs per game, not due to bad passes but to his bad handles) passing to that starting crew!

Rumors out of Russia that Seva is getting a 2-way with Dallas.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Mavericks/comme...ve_twoway/

"According to sports commentator and journalist Vladimir Spivak, Dallas intends to offer guard Vsevolod Ishchenko a two-way contract."

Might be a new concept for Mavs fans, since Cuban tried as many old guys as he could instead, to see whether one is Benjamin Button. This is just the normal approach. I like it.

What I loved most about the early 90s Cowboys was Jimmy's weekly roster churn. Every week or so he'd sign a few guys, see if they had potential, and then let go of those that didn't. It was like sifting for gold. That's how they got Jay Novacek, James Washington and a slew of offensive linemen that contributed to Super Bowls.

If M/M can master this concept they can eventually churn out two or three rotation players on the cheap.

If true, fantastic news. And then we only have to open one roster slot.

If this comes true and he signs, I'll be very sad that Cjeter doesn't post on the board (Discord only) so that I won't have the opportunity to dunk all over him. There were a couple others on the board who asserted he was strictly and always a draft-n-stash, so I'll dunk on you in Cjeter's absence.

Yes this is the type of trade Masai has in his pocket (with better return obviously)... After LeClown decision we will know more.

I expect Sergio's to be paired with Sasser most of the time.
Sasser at 1 and Sergio at 2.
And if Sergio isn't with Sasser, he'd be paired with Kyrie and even Cooper at times.
But not (at least not for a long while) with Max.
I hope to see the coaching staff devise ways of having the Sasser, Kyrie or Cooper do much of the ball handing while still keeping Sergio involved with the playmaking.

He'd be good as secondary ballhandler/playmaker, but he obviously needs to shoot and hit his shots in this setup.

Like the concept. Clearing cap space next year (as Dan as pointed out) has its benefits. But as a general rule, draft picks 7 years out do nothing for me. Accelerate that to something useful much sooner, and I'm a lot more interested.

I think there's reason to think Mathurin might be in De Larrea's way a little early on, as I expect the rookie will find it easier to get onto the court and succeed WITH Kyrie than he will replacing him (early on). But, I'm not sure that competition isn't the best thing for De Larrea, moving forward.

With Sasser...I wouldn't expect him to play WITH Kyrie much at all, for obvious size reasons. Their games would work together fine, but something tells me this front office isn't going to want to play two guys that small together very often.

It's funny that you mention Henderson. I think I might be getting further away from wanting him than I originally was. Between him, Risacher and Howard, it would start to feel like the team is collecting recent lottery disappointments, lol. Idk...totally lacking in logic, but something about it just feels off to me about that now.
