I don't know "who starts" (nor do I care, really) and won't have an opinion on that until we actually know who's on the team. He COULD start, it's possible, but that wasn't a prediction, just a way of looking at the player synergy.
What's super clear is that the Mavs are rebuilding and THANK GOODNESS. They're making moves with the season after this one in mind, or the one after that. I AM HERE FOR IT!!!
Even if Risacher is terrible here that is really what it’s all about. They may have moved quite a few 2nd rounders (I don’t have a problem with each individual move but the sheer amount of 2nda going out has added up quite a bit) but it’s all been for guys who can be here long term and fit the timeline. Super encouraging to see them bring in so many young guys.

If Christie ends up not being a starter next year, my guess is that it's because of a 2-for-1 move yet to come that adds a starting level guard.

Couldn't agree with this more if I was getting paid to do it. This is everything.

Risacher is another Euro so the fit here may be a lot more comfortable for him and the others to play as they are used to playing.
We have 5 Euros in Risacher, Santi, Sergio, Tarik, & Ishchenko.
You can now field an all European lineup
C Santi
PF Ishchenko
SF Risacher
SG Tarik
PG Sergio

Yes it's probably the biggest hole right now ...

- were able to acquire Sasser in the giant aggregate trade which left the Bi-annual free
- the Mavs then used the Bi to sign Biber
- This leaves the MLE to trade for Risacher
- Thus, the TPE is unused
Yes, I know the Mavs became hard capped at the 1st Apron because of the big trade and, thus, can't use the full $20 mil TPE, as things stand, but if there are trades to come, I just like having things slot with the best number fit.
And I've been mulling the Warriors trade that has been discussed. Though I disagree with those who think Butler would be a bad player to put around Cooper. I think Butler and Cooper are the same players who would rather die than lose. I would love him to set the tone in practices like he did in Minnesota. It was KAT who was the bad influence.
Perhaps GS wouldn't want to give up Yaxel at first in a Gafford/PJ/Klay for Butler trade. But I would be okay with adding Max for Yax.
The Mavs, after the season, would potentially have an obscene amount of cap space with Butler's and Kyrie's deals, among others, coming off the books.
Warriors aren't throwing in Yaxel no matter what we throw at them. We aren't getting their new best prospect. Christie certainly isn't going to change their minds.

I'd probably pin that on Kyrie's backup as i have more trust in Max staying healthy for closer to 82 games than Kyrie and that's with a lot of folks saying Kyrie is a more natural 2 than he is 1. Even if you love Sergio, we need another dude in that rotation. At the 2 spot, we can always slide one of our bigger players into that role soak up minutes.

Agreed. It's a nice dream though. He's going to be great for them right away which fits the Curry timeline. I'd take Cryer off their hands though.

The more I think about this, the more I think there's a deal coming for Marshall and Thompson next.
I think the Mavs have been shopping Gafford and PJW fairly hard, but it just doesn't seem like the league is super into adding longterm salary at the moment. It's not impossible that a deal for either of them materializes, and I think the Cisse match points to them trying to be as prepared as possible to lose Gafford, but...
Marshal and Thompson are the guys who are expiring, and probably not going to get new contracts here.
I don't know if Smitty's trade of both of them for Jrue Holiday is the answer, but that's the type of move I can see happening to finish off the summer at this point.

Read the totality of the post.
The Warriors would be getting three rotation pieces that fit on Steph's timeline. Plus, this is a move done to attract Lebron. AND the Mavs would be eating an injured max player in Butler. The cost is Yaxel.
Max was a sweetener.
Reading is fundamental.

And speaking of GSW, I'd be interested in stealing Cryer from them.
Once people start talking like Max for Yax, we’ve jumped the shark. Yax has all star potential. I’m still not sure if Max is anything more than a 8th best player.

It would make some sense. I was really against a Jrue trade last offseason. Now with the Mavs not any closer to a title, It does make some sense now. It would clear out the logjam and Jrue would fit well. I just thought he was a clear cog in Portland’s dream to take the next step,.

Irving
Risacher
Flagg
Washington
Johnson Jr
I think that is pretty clearly the starting five IF they move on from Gafford.
I would rather see Aldama at center and Johnson at PF rather than the above lineup. I don't really know who will start, but I don't think Johnson is your starting center. I think Dusty will play him where he's most comfortable to start and that's PF. Even if PJW starts, I think Johnson will be the PF initally.
Having Aldama at center really opens things up for Flagg, but until we know Lively's situation it's hard to predict. I'm guessing Risacher comes off the bench to start. The wings have several options. In a sense, Naji and PJW are expendable but are also swiss army knife-types if they do stay. Biberovik will need minutes. Can he play SG with so many wings?
Everyone on this roster is used to playing 20-25 MPG with the exception of Sasser, Cisse, and Martin. Martin might as well wear street clothes. Someone will get squeezed if all the wings stay.
I think the Mavs do anything more, it's a 2-for-1 and a buyout.

Max is a better shooter than Risacher but he is smaller so the defense is maybe better with Risacher.
Now the Hawks have 2 Nembhard's.

Issac Harris on a live feed just now with a bold quote:
"I just flat out think Moussa is going to be a better basketball player next year than Gafford...and if you think that, then why not pay $3 million for that player vs. the contract that Gafford's making right now?"

For me Flagg is about 25 years old - like 3-4 years before his absolute prime.
That means every player 3 or 4 years younger or alder than 25 is on his timeline.

This trade isn't necessarily "the hill I'm going to die on" (I honestly don't care about it). but stating Yax, a 24 year old rookie, after one Summer League game, has All Star potential, is far more hyperbolic.
Pre-Draft everyone was wanting a 1st for PJ, Gafford, Naji and Max EACH. And at least a 2nd for Klay. Now, suddenly, people are happy getting ONE 1st (Yaxel) for a combination of them while eating dead weight in one of Steph's few remaining seasons.
Make it make sense.

Lots on here makes little sense.
But I do have faith in the decision makers running and leading the team.
