Trade & Free Agency 2026/2027
Chris Haynes on Jalen Duren: "If he takes that (qualifying offer) ...he really wants out; he is fed up...he doesn't want to be there. Even if that's the case I would say do not do that"

The NFL is like this as well, but the NBA has turned into this where at this time of year and the next two months, every teams fanbase can make a case that they have improved or are on the right track.    Young players getting better, new draft picks, health, trades/FA signings, new coach, etc.    I would guess you could go to any teams sites and you can find a believable case that they are on the right track or better than last year.   These next two-three months are basketball team fan ideal.

Then you lose to the Wizards in your second game of the season......

[Haynes] Michael Porter Jr's agent is scheduled to meet with the Brooklyn Nets towards the tail-end of summer league...If it becomes apparent early on that an extension is not in play, then I do believe the next step will be the Brooklyn Nets and Michael Porter Jr potentially parting ways...

****************
Something to watch.  Porter was good last year.  Sort of a weird guy and has had some injury concerns in the past.    Is this another Claxton situation where the Nets say they want multiple firsts and then eventually just move him for .50 on the dollar?

Porter has another year left on his contract at 40 million but it is only partially guaranteed.   He will be looking for an extension.   Maybe more concerning then giving up assets for him in a trade is the large extension he is expecting.   In today's salary cap, gambling on 35-40 million for that type of player is very risky.   It will be interesting to see what happens there.

Terrence Shannon Jr. (@Sn1per_T) will wear No. 4 for the #Timberwolves. Number last worn by Julian Phillips in 2026. #NBA

I can't believe this guy or his agent. He showed improvement during the regular season but flamed out in the playoffs. The regular season jump got him 3rd team All-NBA.  Does money mean more to him than being a building block on a pretty good team?  I mean, he flirted with the Kings (of all teams), and the Lakers gave their money to Walker Kessler. Being just 22 years old isn't an excuse anymore.

IIRC, there is some evidence of the Clippers funneling $$$ to the 3rd party company that essentially covered Kawahi's deal. So, to my simple mind, everyone involved is complicit.

And now there are other possible deals starting to surface?

I’d say most players money means more than being a building block on a pretty good team, it is a job at the end of the day. Especially that first big contract guys want to capitalize on.

If there's all that to process, this is going to take for-ehv-vehr to be finished. Big aspects of this offseason that won't be resolved prior to training camp.

I'll bet a huge part of the hold-up is the NBA's conversations with their lawyers in how to protect the league from retaliation from Balmer when he gets his just desserts. I'm sure it will take forever to process all of the ramifications there.

The Lakers have again broadened their search for perimeter defense, league sources say, registering interest this week in free agent Matisse Thybulle.

They have already added Ziaire Williams while also continuing to pursue Jonathan Kuminga.

Until he takes the qualifying offer, I think this is just posturing.    I think he will wind up taking the Pistons offer.  Although making the Pistons sweat a little and maybe bump their offer up a little is the play here.   Pistons are pretty locked in.  They really can't afford pissing Duren off.   Even if he had a rough playoff series.

Lakers are building a less talented version of the 2024 Mavs team. Honestly think that they would have been better off just keeping Kennard and Smart.

It feels like they are just trying to give the impression of trying to win to cover their ass. Reminds me of Cuban honestly.

Rightfully so.

This situation is every bit as problematic as the Joe Smith thing from back in the day, and Stern brought the hammer down on those involved with that, I seem to remember.

EDIT: if I was the conspiracy theory type, I might expect the league to make an example of MIL/Trent Jr, so as to avoid having to go to war with Balmer/Kahwi Leonard/Uncle Dennis, lol. Hopefully, the one that actually matters gets punished. I kind of think having to pay Trent Jr this contract for the next four years is punishment enough for MIL.

When a player doesn't get the offer he wants, AND no one else offers him the number he wants either, the market has spoken. He has already been offered what he's worth to GMs, and trying to force it never seems to work. If he's smart, he will take the best offer he's being offered and then get to work to get better.

Maybe the Bucks secretly called the league to complain and look into the incident.  Get the contract voided and pay a penalty instead.

Better conspiracy theory would be that this is a warning shot for next year with all these cheap, weird 1+1 deals signed by so many other players. Who knows how many teams have had similar ideas about next year. Tongue
