MAVS NEWS:
I think the Tarik thing has about 30% chance of success.

But you're taking a low-risk high-reward shot to fill a critical hole without the expense of anyone on the roster. Tarik's presence would effect needed spacing. And depending on the buyout, your ability to manage the roster for the future remains nearly unchanged. This is the year I think you do that.

I think Lebron is a lead balloon fantasy. At the end of the year you've done nothing but suck the attention away from promising players. I think it's a burden on the players and an unreal expectation on the fans. Do we really think Cooper Flagg is going to love this idea? You're building a team around him and then you go an get an NBA legend on his last gasp tour. Do we think LeBron is going to listen to a new coach and a new philosophy this season?

At the end of games, all your players get to sit around and watch Lebron do interviews. "Is this your last season, Lebron"? Ad infinitum.

Edit: Of course, he'll sign with Cleveland or Miami now (LeBron gets to pull everyone's chain one last time). So all good I think. Cleveland makes sense.

I think there are Front Offices that might take the bait. I'm hoping ours isn't one of them.

Of course, last year there was no buyout cost at all, and instead of signing with MEM, he signed a new deal with his Euro team that now will cost him money to get out of. The rules didn't change - when he signed that contract, he knew it had a buyout that would have him asking an NBA team to pay it, if he wants to play in the NBA. He signed it anyhow. The idea that DAL can just go ahead and pay part of it, and pay him more salary too to cover his buyout, that's a good line for Tarik to use in negotiating, but unless he is All-World in Europe (and I've seen nothing that says he is), the Mavs may be willing to just wait. Today's Europe-based report that the Mavs have "not yet come close" on the money would hint that that's kinda where things are.

We'll see where it goes, but right now I'm kinda skeptical he'll be coming.

It all makes me wonder if he used MEM as a negotiating tool that persuaded his team to give him more - pay me more money to stay, and then tack on a big buyout amount so you can get rewarded for having me under this contract when they come back again!

Could definitely be - on the other hand it could simply be that Memphis couldn’t attract him and wasn’t a fit for him at the time. If Schmitz or Ujiri have a personal connection to him that goes years back or if Dallas is much more interesting to him coming from a special city like Istanbul than the non-city Memphis or he liked Dirk as most of this generation of ballers from Europe do, things could go in the other direction easily.

I‘d love for him to join the summer league team, than we‘ll see first hand what he brings to the table and how he differentiates himself from the rest of the talent.

I don't think it's possible for him to join Summer League at this point even if he signed. And since he's had a Summer League years ago, and had had two more years playing Europe, I'm not sure they need that from him now.

But I would like to see him sign.

The buyout isn't really a "depending on" variable.  It's capped at $900k for the Mavs.  The only variable is how much they offer him in a contract to convince him to head state-side.

Only one player has gone out in trade (AJ).  So far, four FA’s have not been picked up…Bagley, Middleton, Powell and BWill. Only Bagley has signed elsewhere.  So, if you assume the five most likely NBA players on the list (two picks, the two NBA players who came by trade and Tarik), they are essentially replacing AJ and four free agents.  Everyone else is still here.

It is hard to argue that the new five are less talented than the outgoing five.

Sasser vs BWill
Morez vs Powell
Aldama vs Bagley
Tarik vs Middleton (OK. This one is arguable in the here and now)
Sergio vs AJJ

Yeah, the roster definitely got deeper and younger.  I hope to see at least one trade sending out a forward/big for a rotational level guard.  That would go a long way into balancing out the roster.

My guess

Safe

Irving/De Larrea/
Christie/Sasser/
Flagg/Marshall/
Washington/Aldama
Johnson/Lively/

Two-way
Poulakidas/Lawal/Ishchenko

Other probables: Nembhard/Biberovic

I don´t think they´d have given up a "1st" and two seconds for Aldama. I think Biberovic was always in their plans, when they completed the trade. Therefore it will get done. Nembhard I put in the probables, cause he does not fit the idea of the new FO perfectly, but they probably valued his skills enough to think he could be used as a situational play or a trade sweetener.

50/50: Gafford/Martin/Cisse. They are probably closely connected. Martin is a horrible contract, but the FO might see his best value as a salary matching tool and Gafford as the best price to do it rather than get three second round picks for Gafford. Let´s say something like Klay/Gafford/Martin for Butler or Klay/Gafford/Martin for Lavine. Cisse probably depends 100% on Gafford.

Likely gone: Thompson, if not as part of the large deal, they´ll find something else.

Gone: Middleton/Powell.

In an article from the Athletic that I can't read, Larrea calls Doncic his boyhood idol.

He had visited the US before coming over after the draft and today is at Jerry's world rooting for his home country Spain in the world cup.  Pretty cool.

That’s the paragraph you mean - he was interviewed after his first training session for the summer league. He came with his girlfriend, they were positively impressed with the city and he‘s in the stadium right now enjoying the win of Spain against Portugal.

Secret hint: you can easily read The Athletic articles switching to the reader option in Safari on an iPhone.

On Monday, fresh off going through his first summer-league practice with the Mavericks, De Larrea said that his fandom for the team stemmed from watching Luka Dončić, the stepback-3-loving Slovenian who first began to break out as a star with the Spanish club Real Madrid.
“I saw Luka when he came from Madrid to here,” said De Larrea, who was born in Valladolid, about an hour northwest of Madrid via train. “He was for me, like, my idol in my younger era. For that reason, I was a Maverick fan a long time ago.”

Tarık Biberovic, who signed a 1+1 year contract with the Dallas Mavericks, will earn a total of 14 million dollars over 2 years!

Tarık Biberovic, earning an annual salary of 1.4 million dollars at Fenerbahçe, will earn a net 4 million dollars annually on his new team after taxes.

Fenerbahçe will receive a 2 million dollar buy-out fee for this transfer.

Still don't get how he signed anything, given that the Mavs ***still*** don't have his draft rights. Get these trades completed!!!

Tbh, Sasser is the one who really concerns me.

I'd probably like Dumont a lot more if he smacks Cuban around even if it is through the legal process.

These are the numbers to keep in mind, save, write down, etc.

$16,235,142 Luxury Tax Room
$23,477,557 First Apron Space

$12,117,171 Non-taxpayer Mid-Level remaining
$21,080,154 Anthony Davis TPE available

The Mavs absolutely can NOT exceed the first apron this season, at any point. They can go into the tax; however, I think that's very unlikely.

One thing of note... The Mavs only have ~$12.1m remaining of the MLE to use as a signing/trade exception, but up to ~$16.2m below the Tax.
Who falls in the $12.2m-$16.2m range, where preserving that AD TPE was crucial in allowing them to go over the MLE number, but stay below the tax line...

One blinking red light is Nikola Jovic at exactly $16.2m.
Terance Mann is another name that's less mentioned at $15.5m.
Dennis Schroder of course, $14.8m
Scoot Henderson $13.6m
Moses Moody $12.5m
Jarred Vanderbilt $12.4m

These are just simple trades where the player is received via AD TPE. Of course, the $$ spread would be different if any player is outgoing.
