Trade & Free Agency 2026/2027

Me too... But Sergio is not a real PG.

I would be looking for any ball-handling guard who could create offense at an elite level, or had the potential to grow into that description.

I know why your list started with "good positional size for a SG"...because that's the model we saw work here with Luka/Kyrie. But for me, "fits with Kyrie" is only a temporary requirement, and so I wouldn't really consider it a requirement at all. That's not born of some need to get rid of Kyrie (I think they clearly aren't), but all I'd be looking at are players' fits with Flagg, Johnson and (probably still, for me) Lively.

Simons to Philly for 2 years 13 million.    Dallas must be working on bigger things.   That is cheap.

Something I'm starting to think about is that the most recent information we have is that Sergio will come and play in Summer League, but they are still discussing if he comes for the season. The first time this was mentioned, I just sort of assumed they would figure out a way to get him over here for the season, but the last I heard this wasn't a given. The discussion appears to be real and could go either way.

I could see where a discussion like this might impact the Mavs FA and trade signings.

I just don't think that Ujiri would ever go for a player like this. The few small guys he actually valued all were plus defenders.

I sincerely doubt the Mavs were offering anything close to the full MLE anyway.  He is better off on a contender that can hide his weaknesses.

Anfernee Simons has managed to score a new deal from Philadelphia richer than the offers made by Golden State and Maimi and chooses the 76ers over Dallas' interest as well.

Source close to the talks confirms that the scoring guard has verbally agreed to sign with Philadelphia.

Simons -- who has averaged 18.8 points over the past five seasons and ranked sixth in 3s made off the bench last year -- gives the 76ers a major offensive boost after the team ranked in the bottom three in reserve scoring and 3-pointers made. His agent Bill Duffy of WME Basketball informed the 76ers of Simons’ decision this afternoon.

Just in: Free agent guard Anfernee Simons has agreed to a two-year, $12.3 million deal with the Philadelphia 76ers, with a player option in second season, sources tell ESPN. Simons chose the 76ers over other suitors believing his fit is perfect with the revamped 76ers roster.

... "Dallas' interest" ??

The way Stein worded this makes me wonder if Dallas actually had much of an interest in Simons to begin with.

Yeah, as i mentioned Stein does not have access inside right now.   Seeing what Simons went for, this sounds like a well placed tip by an agent saying a team who needs guard and has the full MLE has interest.

1) a big-for-position SG,
2) who could take minutes at lead guard,
3) who is a great POA (as opposed to POS) defender,
4) who has creational abilities only a bit less prodigious than Cooper and Kai’s,
5) who is a lights-out 3-point shooter, and
6) who is either young or a great vet presence.

Sadly, that’s a HOF resume.

Who comes closest whom we can reasonably acquire?

I would throw out Scoot as an option.  He can create offense.  Only 6' 3" but bulky and +6 wingspan.  Young with room to grow.  I would take a flyer if the price is right.

I'd be thrilled to see him get a shot instead of watching Klay continue to decline.

My only hope for Jrue would be that El Cheapo is looking to save some money. I don't think you can justify adding any picks. The good news is that the Blazers fans I've seen don't seem to think his value is that high.

This is my current favorite pipe dream. He checks all of the boxes for what I was hoping they'd do this summer, if only in a "has potential to" sort of way, but it looks like that's the business they're in with some of these other moves. And, you can't tell me he's not available.

I would say this is likely, even...only we don't know whether or not Schmitz likes this kid (and he'd know).

I don’t know if we can carry so many “developmental” players on the roster at one time. Not having the 2027 pick, I don’t think Dallas wants to be horrible again by giving all these guys minutes. At least to begin the year, I expect them to play the guys that give them the best chance to win games.

Excellent point. We don't know what we don't know there.

If he's really cheap, sure.  He had a nice 20 game stretch to close the season and into the playoffs, but if he can be a good shooter is a big question mark and his got some injury history in his short time in the league.
