Do any of you feel this is eerily similar to the Luka trade? How Luka was traded was more messy, but Parsons was probably the best player on his team as well. What is Jerry Jones doing?

I'm all for it, personally. Football players decline faster than those of any other sport, and to me it seemed like Parsons was starting to fade down the stretch of these seasons more and more with each passing year. Plus, Jones has a history of overpaying older players for past glory and name recognition. I am nowhere near as scared of old MLB or NBA players as I am of old NFL players. If I ran an NFL team, I'd be much more frugal than most GM/owners with 2nd contracts, and I'd almost never give out 3rd contracts.
I think refusing to overpay an undersized defensive end (because that's what he is - should've been a linebacker, but all he has ever done is rush the passer) might end up looking like genius in the (not very) long run.

Haven’t posted here for a bit, but couldn’t help but to notice the similarities in the two trades. However, as a life long Cowboys fan, I’ve become a bit numb to what Jerrah has done to this team over the last 30 years and have had nowhere near the emotional reaction I did when we traded Luka. Also, the Cowboys got better compensation in this deal, and we won’t have to commit $44M to one defensive player. If Parsons was all that transformative to a team, why didn’t we win more over the last 4 years? (I know there are other reasons, too lol)
I have an Uncle who is a die hard Iggles fan. He texted me about the trade today and asked me what I thought. I told him I felt indifferent. He said he felt sad for me because he knows i grew up bleeding silver and blue. I will always like the Cowboys but can sum up my feelings about them in this quote from the great Peter LaFleur: “I found that if you have a goal, that you might not reach it. But if you don’t have one, then you are never disappointed. And I gotta tell ya…it feels phenomenal!” I’m ready for some Mavericks basketball!!!!

Honestly Jerry Jones is still being Jerry.
My day was already going poor and then the (expected) trade news dropped and my day got even worse. I sort of hate this return, because the odds of those picks turning out to be a better player than Parsons is low. One bright side is that Parsons did have a habit of disappearing in some big moments. How much of that is his fault vs. the coaches/Dak/d-line etc. is up for debate. As to the similarities with the Luka trade. There is some of the same feelings, but truthfully being so completely blindsided from the Luka news can really never be topped. Luka was the closest thing we had to Dirk, and we just never trade those guys. Ever. Parsons was a great player. He was never in the same category as a "Luka-esque" guy in the NFL. Plus it did help that Parsons got out ahead of it a couple of months ago saying he's out of Dallas for good so I've had some time to prepare for this inevitable trade. Jerry Jones is still Jerry. Nico has his work cut out for him if he wants to keep the title of the worst sports manager in Dallas.

The Cowboys are stupid and incapable of building a contending team, but the Parson’s situation is not comparable to trading an elite NBA player. A better comparison to the Luka trade would be if Buffalo did something like trade Josh Allen for McCaffrey and a 1st round pick, i.e., for an aging, often injured but great player who plays a non premium position. QB is really the only position where a single NFL player could plausibly be anywhere close to the impact an NBA star has on team outcomes.

I think it is similar in that the Cowboys focused on teams that had a good DT to trade instead of opening up the bidding to get the most draft picks possible. I'm not a huge fan of the return.
Micah Parsons is 26 years old. I don't understand the comment that he is on the decline. By every metric, he is a top 3 defensive player in the NFL and he is just entering his prime. The only logic for the trade is the Cowboys would be a very top heavy team salary wise with Dak, Ceedee, and Micah and that trio has not shown you they're good enough to compete for a title.

It's fair to knock his playoff performance and say he's more of a James Harden level player.

A big trade. For whatever reason, Jerry couldn't get Parsons to the signing table.
But I can't rate it equivalent to Luka mostly because it's a different sport. Basketball is (ideally) five guys working together to be successful on both ends of the court. One guy can have a huge impact on the results. Football is 25 guys but only about half of them are on field at a time and they don't play both ways. Parsons will likely make nice contributions to the GB defense, but he's only going to affect ~ half the game. More broadly, I've been a Cowboys fan since the Staubach days, but the last 20+ years have killed any enthusiasm I once had.

Yeah, I'm actually okay with the trade because I think his lackluster run defense makes it tough to swallow his insane contract, but the idea that he's declining at age 26 is crazy talk. He is one of the premier pass rushers in the NFL and will continue to be that for the length of this contract, barring injury.

Not the same because:
Parsons does not have near the value of an elite NBA player. I'm not sure an elite QB has the value of an elite NBA player. Parsons asked to be traded. Luka had every intention of being a Maverick lifer. The Mavs had just come off a finals appearance. The Cowboys don't look to be anywhere near that level anytime soon. The Parsons trade return was moderately disappointing. The Luka trade return was a travesty. ![]() • F Gump, ItsGoTime, Jmaciscool, michaeltex, rocky164, SleepingHero, Smitty

God I hope TCU is good this year. At least then Saturday football will be enjoyable. Jerry just keeps whittling away at my enthusiasm for a franchise I used to love.

They also got their butts handed to them last week. I suppose I am consistent in the football teams I like in terms of how bad they are

This is off-topic, but there's nothing going on in the NBA, really, and this thread kind of opened the door a crack, so...
I was pleasantly surprised by this Cowboys game. They didn't win, obviously, and there were some tangible and disappointing mistakes we can point to that explain why, but Philly is obviously among the best teams they'll face this year, and I don't think it's an exaggeration to say they matched up well with the Eagles, even outplaying them at times. For all the talk of missing Parsons, I felt they were able to put decent pressure on Hurts. The problem in the first half was that the pressure played into Philly's hands, and they weren't able to keep him contained, once pressured (a blatant missed holding call on the left tackle on Ezeiruaku helped with that). In the second half, Eberflus smartly switched his coverages in the secondary to a more zone-heavy approach, keeping more eyes on Hurtz, and that helped quite a bit. Similarly, the defense made some great adjustments in the second half to shut down Philly's run game. They looked as dominant as I've seen them look in years. I think I saw that Barkely gained one total yard on his last SEVEN carries, which is obviously a big reason Dallas was able to stay in the game all the way until the end. Kenny Clark is a beast, and I'm glad he's a Cowboy. Offensively, I couldn't believe how well Dallas was able to run the ball at times. In true Cowboys fashion, it seems like we're seeing the early stages of an offensive line that could grow into the league's best soon. All three of the Tylers were marvelous, imho. I thought Dak looked pretty good. About three dropped passes, the worst of them being Ferguson's dropped touchdown, kept his night from looking VERY good, actually. I thought the new offense was interesting, less predictable than it has been in recent years, and for one week at least, it seemed like it was designed by someone who understands the weapons the Cowboys have at their disposal. It was nice to see Turpin more involved in the offense. I hope they find ways to get Pickens some more targets moving forward. All in all, I was impressed, actually. It's easy to get frustrated by losing a game that was winnable, and I know that's a common theme in the life of Cowboys fans these past 30 years (lol), but I would guess most of us expected this game to be lopsided, and not in the Cowboys' favor. I came away feeling like an extra five minutes on the clock would've resulted in a Dallas victory, which is absolutely not what I expected leading up to the game. I'm cautiously optimistic that we're in for a decent season.

Commanders/Giants/Eagles fan here thinking Jerry finally made decent moves hiring BS and trading Parsons.
Cowboys should have won that game if it weren't for dropped passes in critical situations. Dak looked sharp and more nimble than the past few years and the defense looked decent considering the loss of Parsons. I still think Eagles and GB are the teams to beat in the NFC but Cowboys will exceed expectations if they stay healthy.

I was impressed by Dallas. I have no expectations. I was really doubtful about the Schotty hire. Still think it won't work out, but I have liked almost everything he has done. I really thought not playing ANYONE in preseason that we would see the same old Cowboys in game one, with them being undiscplined, not organized and just sloppy. For the most part, they were discplinend and prepared. Shotty even managed the clock smartly. It seems like every Cowboys coach has had issues with this. So for one game, I give it a thumbs up. Still 0-1.
The next two are huge though. They need to beat teams who are worse or similar to them. They won game 1 last year and then got curb stomped by a bad Saints team at home. I think Dallas is comfortably the third best team in the NFC east. That could change. I thought Dallas and the Giants would be close to each other, the Giants looked so poor though. That coach and GM are dead man walking and Russ Wilson is a shell of his former self.

Dak staying healthy is the key.
Pickens/Lamb has to be one of the best WR duos in the league, if not the best. The defense is suspect but I thought they looked decent. Seriously I've been a Chiefs fan since Jerry bought the team. |
