Gafford Extension - 3 years almost $60M
https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/4557...r-60m-deal
Dallas Mavericks center Daniel Gafford intends to sign a three-year contract extension worth nearly $60 million, sources told ESPN on Monday.
Mavericks officials and Gafford's agents, Mike George and Shy Saee of Klutch Sports, negotiated the new deal through 2028-29. Gafford, who turns 27 in October, is set to make around $14 million next year before the extension kicks in.
COMMENT
Looks like it starts in the 18-19M range, although the whispered total often includes incentives so we'll have to see how it looks once hard numbers get leaked. In any event, this is more than I expected, but others here saw this coming. Well done.

No idea if this information is correct Mr FGump. Stein reported 3/$54 as well.

This is the maximum amount Daniel Gafford can extend for within the extend-and-trade limits.
He can get a 120 percent raise off his $14.4 million salary in 2025-26, which starts him at $17.3 million in 2026-27.
Then with 5 percent raises, it tops out at $54.3 million.

Thanks. This is fresh news and still filtering out.
FWIW, Gozlan didn't report 54M -- he just responded to Stein's number.
But I trust Stein, not Shams, as the one with the correct number.

Great deal for both sides. If he’s still trade eligible immediately, and that’s the plan, then his value just went up significantly.

Agent rounding up?
He's certainly more valuable as a trade piece with the extra years. Hopefully it is the $54mm number whether it is to stay or to go.

If it’s really the $54m that Stein reported, making him trade eligible, there’s no reason Gafford does it unless there’s a deal in place to get him to a spot where he can start?? I think we’ll get Gafford news: traded to LAL/ATL/CHI around the draft.

I tend to disagree. Gafford gets security. With potentially one more payday in his career after this one.
Dallas gets to be patient and see how everything fits. If Lively as good as I think he can be and Davis shows he can’t play 32 minutes at PF, then Gafford can be moved as a cost controlled asset.
It just gives Dallas time. Maybe Gafford is here for the next four years, but I also think he increases as an asset if he stays healthy.
I don’t believe they signed him to trade him immediately.

Maybe this means AD or Lively are moving?

Gafford-Martin-Hardy-Powell works for Jrue (assuming a 3rd team to take part of that package).
And while it's really tight, the Mavs after a Kyrie redo can fill out the 15-man roster with minimums and still stay below A2 (which would be their hard cap number). I would pencil in Exum and Kai as filling 2 of them. Maybe Edwards too?
However, in that scenario, who starts? The backups not expected to start would be Kai, Naji, Christie, Exum, Williams, Omax?

Oh let’s freaking go!!!
Doesn’t mean he won’t be traded, but I can’t imagine just extending him to trade him 2 weeks later

That at least looks manageable.
And I have a similar thought that SH just had. It's easier to see him stay with the Mavs - which I kind of like.
Make Boston and Atlanta beg.

Let me add I love Gafford. I know there are warts and I understand there are playoff concerns, but he plays hard all the time and brings energy whenver he is on the court. Very little empty stats from him imo. that is valuable. In time, it will be hard to keep him when Lively extends (if he proves to be what we think he can be) and AD ages, but that is a discussion for another day or year.
I think he wouldn't be moved until next trade deadline or potentially much later. It just gives dallas options. And Gafford secures a really good payday for a really good backup or tandem center.

Interesting new note: Gaff deal said to have 5% trade kicker.
That might make him untradeable by the Mavs until at least 2026-27 season because of hard cap limits, unless he waives it.
And from his POV, he wants to stay in DAL, takes a bit less in his mind to stay, but will get it back if he is sent away. Seems fair.

That makes sense also. Just find it interesting that he did the one thing that makes him trade eligible immediately. His agent in the background says, this is your market value ish and we’re getting you to team X. He’s the 3rd best Center on this team. He may not feel that way, but his Agent knows it. Either way, im perfectly fine with the 18M AAV. I said before that the Adams deal wasn’t the framework for Gafford, because he’s much better.

We’ve been talking Gafford trades for a few months. The point that he did a deal that makes him tradable is noteworthy.

Yes. And? That doesn't erase the humor I find in our armchair GM'ing.

Assuming that's true, and your interpretation of the impact is correct...
If I was a player agreeing to a deal early in order to be traded to a preferred team, this is exactly the type of clause I would want added. Just think of it as a different form of a no trade clause. Since he's the one signing first, it's insurance against Dallas changing the deal after the ink is dry.
