Luka Dealt to Lakers: Nico Harrison is a Basketball Terrorist
anyone check if Nico is shorting the Sands hotel stock?

I know I am joking, but I am devasted. Just trying to get through this. I have spent so much time involved with the Mavs. I just don't know if I can continue.

Here's GM Nico Harrison's message for any Mavericks fans frustrated by the Luka Dončić trade:

"I'm sorry they're frustrated, but it's something we believe in as an organization that's going to make us better. [...] When we win, I believe the frustration will go away."

I think he is so sorely mistaken

This is a type of move that will surely define his career tbh.
We somehow win with this move (and Lakers don't, at least soon) and he Nico is the new Pat Riley
We lose the trade, and he has no job in the NBA, possibly not even for Nike as many agents won't trust dealing with him again.

Personally, I feel it will end bad, I always thought Lindsey was the one who actually made Nico looks good

Nico and Kidd were Cuban’ hires.  The gifts that keep on giving. Cuban can’t fully distance himself from this.

I’m in the same boat. Just feel aimless right now.

Can’t believe I woke up to this nightmare

just said “there is so much anger” within the Mavs organization right now.

Remember the organization stretches from the players & coaches to the employees on the business side.

I mean sure, but new owners kept them, and approved the deal.

Right now, Nico made this franchise his, tbh. Only Powell has been here before him.

It reminds me of FC Barcelona under Rossell. He was jealous of the fact that the generational coach and player were bought by the previous president, and was trying his best to undermine them, and even replace them, in order to have any future success only credited to him.

I fear Nico might be the same, and could be one of those with main character syndrome

I wonder if Nico made this personal.  It seems like his dad had little love for the front office.  Not sure if this was just because of the trade or if something else happened?  Did Luka and Nico not see eye to eye and made this personal?

More I think of it. Nico needs to be fired this offseason. He doesn’t care about the Mavs. Something really sus with how he traded a superstar player - only went to one team etc. Amateur gm and idiotic behavior.

This isn’t an outlandish thought at all.  Jerry wanted the credit that people gave Jimmy.  Shaq and Kobe didn’t want to share credit.  The new boss in the corporate world often suffers from the same disease.

Nico (whether is was all DL, all Nico, or combo effort) has transformed the roster over the last couple of years but if the Mavs had beat the Celtics last year the lion’s share of the credit for a chip was going to the guy brought in by the previous FO.  Some folks egos are so big they can’t share ANY credit for success.

We have seen the same hubris with the Bulls about organizations winning titles. How did it work out for them?  The Knicks are another major market franchise and struggled all these years till recently.   Generational talents don’t grow on trees. If this was the limit for this team with Luka you just accept it, pay him the supermax and continue for the next three to five years.  Or you make a rally bold move to reset for now and the future with some young stud and a lot of picks.

The Mavs did neither of those. They claim they want to win right now but got a worse player than Luka. Just because he is a two way player doesn’t mean he is better. He is a fit next to Kyrie but this increases the load on Kyrie to create for himself and for others.  Luka used to take a lot of the pressure off Kyrie. Plus AD is not the most aggressive guy on the court. .

OTOH if Nico really wanted to go all in , he should have just asked for LeBron instead.  At least Bron gives you more of a chance than does AD. Also unlike AD Bron doesn’t need to be constantly motivated to play hard.  Again I am not saying we should have got Bron. This whole thing is just garbage and poor negotiation skills from Nico. Maybe he got intimidated by Pelinka or trying hard to get into that circle for his after GM career. .

Right there with you man. I know I’m done With basketball. A 47 year love affair. College game is a mess in every way. I’ve been an unbelievable run following this franchise. I live in Upstate NY and winters are brutal. Blizzarding now. The Mavs have been what has gotten me through the rough winters. Shit, I was suicidal before the 2011 run. No joke. That was like a gift from the heavens.

This FEELS personal. Like a giant F’ U to an entire fan base. Time will tell. I’m sticking to to my guns on this: this is Sheldensen family business, not a basketball decision. They will move the team to Las Vegas. Nothing else about it makes sense. The Lakers got a sweetheart deal for the good of the league and Sheldonsons will get what they wanted in due time.

my guess is our next big move will be trading a package of pj gafford Naji and whatever filler for Jimmy Butler, then our starting five will astonishingly be Kyrie/klay/butler/davis/lively, which will make mavs a serious contender immediately. we will win a streak of games late in the season and the top teams will try their best to avoid facing us early in the post season. davis, as prone as he's thought to be, has played more games than doncic last season and this season. we are a win now team anyway, if we don't make this move and fail to win a title by 2026, will we still have any chance to convince fatboy to stay? after all Dallas is a small market and it's hard for us to keep such high profile superstars tbh. at least we won't get lebroned, and davis is also a top 10 player in the league that can make us a contender again.

Nico sucker-punched/gut-punched the Mavs fan base. How are they going to sell that as a positive? Does he figure the rank-and-file are anything but mad/sad/livid? And "hey y'all, buy some tickets." "Get our streaming service." Grrrr!

Okay... It might be time to find the bright side in this -

Anyone else realize the Lakers just reunited Luka and Christian Wood??

I recommend this listen, too. McMahon lets some inside tea slip.

Thanks for posting.  His Mavs trade is Gafford, Marshall and a lightly protected first for Collin Sexton. Ugh!  Not really a fan

It's pretty clear, and you can tell from the McMahon discussion taht KL posted, that Nico (and probably Kidd) were tired of Luka having to play his way into shape every season. They also believed that the nagging injuries were because of his lack of taking care of his health. I love Luka, but I could have lived with him being traded if the return wasn't so obviously too low. Luka for Giannis? Sign me up. Luka for AD, Reaves, and 3 FRPs? I don't love it, but fine. It's just shocking that Nico was so fed up that he was wiling to take what he got just to get him out of town.

Yea, I wouldn't even be mad if we got all the Lakers 1sts and Austin Reaves.
