FA: Naji Marshall To DAL | 3yrs/27mil

The fact the Mavs could be SnT for Marshall and giving the Pelicans Maxi means that DJJ could still be had....

Sources say Dallas remains focused on securing a commitment from Klay Thompson and completing a sign-and-trade that lands Thompson into its looming Tim Hardaway Jr. trade exception. The Mavericks' hope earlier today was that they still had a path to land Thompson and keep Jones.

He shoots 2 threes a game. Calling him a true 3 and D player is being generous.

Let's hope they get Klay and Grimes shows up because this is a major fail. No other way to spin it. He's a 9th-10th man on a team with championship aspirations.

djj wouldn't take less than 10m/yr. dude wants the full MLE but that would jeopardize the Klay deal so it was a choice that had to be made, and it was a hard one. maybe even a full MLE wouldn't satisfy him. resigning DJJ was our priority as Nico once said and things changed a little once Klay emerged as a realistic target for us. and now what used to be his top priority is more likely going to be an impossibility.

words are just words, tbh. don't get surprised even if Klay ends up somewhere else as well.

Marshall is a solid signing though, at that price especially, will turn out to be a bargain probably.

FGump was right

We couldnt both give Klay the $16.1 million and give DJJ the MLE

You're not incorrect. I prefer DJJ.

But compared to DJJ, Marshall is essentially a true 3-D guy in terms of how they play.

I'm holding out hope the Mavs are doing a SnT with the Pelicans. Maxi for Marshall. Retain DJJ. Then SnT with Klay.

Mavs moved to plan b fast. I wonder if there was a lot of doubt or if they got a firm answer on Jones.

I am not sure if we improved but Marshall will probably be fin in an off bench role and playing 20-25 minute a night. It is tough to tell a starter on a finals team who is a fa that we want you back but we can’t guarantee a starting spot.

I didn’t know Marshall has shot so well from 3. We will see.

Mavs clearly didn't want to wait the 15 days and have some team like Detroit offer DJJ something ridiculous and they're left with scraps.

Tough to see Derrick Jones Jr go… but Naji Marshall is a great replacement for Mavs.

26 years old
6’7” with a 7’1” wingspan
Good defense
40.7% on wide open threes
39.6% on catch & shoot threes
42% on corner threes

Nico Harrison continues to show he is very good at his job.

This is a good deal for the mavs. Let’s see what else they do. I’ll never complain about them signing two way players like Marshall

Right? He thought DJJ would sign a 1+1 deal for the BAE. Right is a bit of a stretch. Big Grin

I should probably log off. Not in the mood for random twitter homers trying to hype up Naji Marshall as a good get. This guy isn't at top 8 rotation player in the playoffs. He's a James Johnson or Deswhan Stevenson level player.

I liked DJJ much better as a 3 and guarding wings/guards. But DJJ may be able to fill in some at 4 with us. I don’t think Marshall can. Maybe Maxi is back but a backup 4 looks to be a pretty good home now. May need to use the remaining MLe to get a guy as insurance.

Marshall is 6'7, 220. DJJ was 6'5 210.

Marshall could definitely play some 4.

Bulkier than DJJ. Looking at the matchup data he is more of a true SF on defense. Good defender but not providing the same kind of POA defense that earned DJJ his starting spot.

2 thoughts:

1) this is reading to me like the Mavs don’t want to wait around for DJJ to be able to negotiate, not that they know he’s leaving.

2) but also, I bet they know this offer is lower than what he was going to want, and would’ve required a hard sell. In other words, they really are prioritizing giving Thompson too much money over bringing back their best defender.

I’m pretty bummed.

I do like Marshall, however. More offensively skilled than Jones, for sure. People who think they’re similar defensively…I don’t think so.

In any event, I hope they didn't do this move without Klay being in the (unannounced) bag. Folks are asserting Marshall isn't a starter-level player. DJJ was our starter. If the Mavs don't get Klay, they have four starters and the Adrian Griffin role.
