They will cash that cap space for good players, stars if possible. Kyrie might not be their first choice, but if there is nothing else, he might be the best option available. They severly lack a PG and he doesn't have a problem sharing the ball. Kyrie might also team up with someone else to go to Houston, as Dan suggested, and there are ways for Houston to do that. Not two max guys, but one near max and one good player is certainly possible to add to all that young core. I don't have an issue with the idea that HOU is ready to move forward, if they can. Never said or implied otherwise. BUT, that doesn't mean they would want to entrust their youth movement to Kyrie. (One other item of note - there are rumors that HOU would want Harden and vice versa, to be their big money guy.) But for all the reasons I stated, I don't think that overcomes the many significant "Kyrie to HOU" obstacles. The most significant one that I think you guys are ignoring? Kyrie won't be interested in the least, AND will have other suitors as needed. Probably Dallas will be all he needs. If I'm wrong I'm wrong, but I think this idea will prove to be way off base. You can agree with Dan, and I will disagree with both of you! We'll see what happens.

Turn on Knicks/Cavs first thing Reggie Miller slaps you with: Teams that won the rebounding battle are 10-0 in these play-offs.
We would have done well.

So far Grant Williams has been a DNP-CD for the Celtics. According to rumors he turned down a 4/50 extension. Not sure if he can find a team that is willing to pay more in free agency.

IF DD opts out and IF he wants more than the Warriors are able to give him as a non-Bird FA (which given his level of play this season, I think he deserves), then what does Golden State do? 2. In the snippet you copied, I made reference to a post from the previous day. Don’t know if you read it or not, but in it I made all the requisite qualifications. I assumed I didn’t have to do it each time I speak of Kyrie and Houston. Since Dallas doesn’t necessarily have a choice in the matter, the word “let” probably is poorly chosen. Kyrie gonna do what Kyrie gonna do. Yes, the most likely scenario is staying in Dallas. Yes, playing with the kids in Houston isn’t likely (unless he can secure another star to join him). Yes, Houston might prioritize someone else…blah blah blah. But, there is a universe where I can see Kyrie and a star deciding to join up in Houston to get the money they want. Houston would need to clear a bit more space, but it wouldn’t be difficult at all. In that scenario, Dallas would find itself with three options…1. Help facilitate Houston getting more cap space. 2. Pay something for a TPE in the $40+ million range. 3. Lose Kyrie for nothing and have only $30mm in space. Yeah, it might take paying something to get the a TPE for a player you already paid a ton to get. But that is the risk you take when you trade for UFA’s. We’ll know in about 2 1/2 months. We can spend that time continuing to bemoan past mistakes or we can look forward and examine all of the things that could go wrong and all of the opportunities we might have…even if not the most likely outcomes. Frankly, I’m choosing to move on and look forward.

White + Brogdon or Irving + Wood? In the first scenario you can probably keep DFS.

I get the idea that GS might not have the ability to offer DD enough to get him to stay. But not convinced that's a "second apron" or new CBA issue. They lost both OPJ and Payton last summer for the same reason (under the old rules). It's the risk that always has gone with signing a discount free agent, on a one-year contract. I would also add that it's very possible this outcome was GS's game plan -- ie, they hoped he would be useful enough to outplay the contract, with the outcome that he walks and they replace him with a different one-year bargain player (perhaps at the minimum). Their bloated total payroll is getting to be an issue for them. 2 My opinion on the likelihood of Kyrie-to-HOU is clearly much different than yours -- I don't see it as likely enough of a possibility to think it offers a feasible plan to get DG from GS. I don't see any need to debate it - we can just agree to disagree and then see what happens from here.

Would you have any interest in him?
John Collins is just screaming to be moved this summer. The question is is he even remotely worth 25 million a year?
There were reports he was going to Phoenix before they decided to go after Durant. Not sure how it would have worked out but Crowder and A 23 first round pick was included. 3 team trade?

Going to be difficult if they keep Kyrie and/or aren´t able to move at least one out of THJ/Bertans. I think he would be the perfect MLE target but a number of teams with capspace might think the same.
It's so frustrating that the Mavs payroll is such a mess. Too many out-sized deals, and they bump up against limits (like aprons) without having a a ton of talent to use in trade. What a terrible place Cuban has put this franchise, where they get that transcendent star, then Cuban's ongoing bad GM-ing makes it so hard to put a strong team around him.
Cuban's cheapness in refusing for so many years to get expert front office GM-ing is a killer. |
