It's interesting that the report says "DFS is available for a star" and this guy comes back with "if they can get a first" which are basically two completely different directions.

What if we try to put all the pieces together… Maybe the plan is to trade DFS for a first and then use multiple firsts in a separate deal or add a 3 team to get a star player?

IF they can get a 1st for DFS. Of course we can. It’s a question of the quality of said pick and it’s protections. They better have something great lined up if they deal DFS though.

Didn’t we cover this about six hours ago in this same thread?
Utah has to send draft equity and matching salary for DFS. We combine that with additional salary and additional draft equity and target a star. My presumption is Siakam, but it could certainly be others. Part of me wonders why the Phoenix radio host has so much knowledge of the Mav’s plans for DFS unless it is a Phoenix player or we are jacking with a Phoenix destination for Crowder. It also crossed my mind that we are somehow getting in the middle of the reported Utah/Atlanta deal involving Collins (does anyone consider him a star?).
BTW, Wood, DFS and Frank are a salary match for Siakam with DFS going to Utah and Wood going to Toronto (one of Omahen’s predictions yesterday). If there is a team who could use Wood’s shooting and has the defensive studs in the front court to hide him, it is Toronto. That checks a box for me. I also agree with those who posted that DFS/Markkanen and Kessler is a formidable and well balanced front court. Dallas ends up with a second star that Toronto can’t afford to Super-Max. The bones are there.

Don't tase me bro but I would trade DFS for KO and a first right now. DFS is having a really mediocre year. He is on the decline. I would cash in before other teams take notice. I think KO is usable in our bigs rotation.

lol sorry bud, I wasn't trying to make you rehash all that. I was really just commenting on this aspect of it. The fact that a national report and a random Phoenix reporter have a very different view of this whole thing. I agree and hope it's what you are hinting at.

Just an observation: we're desperately looking for...
Stretch big who works well with Luka
Don't we have that in Wood?
Bigger 2-way Wing
Don't we have that in DFS?
Starting 2nd Ball Handler
Don't we have that with DFS?
Young Defensive Stopper
Don't we have that in Green?
Efficient Scorer off the Bench
Don't we have that in THJ?
That said, I'd say the only NEED is at backup point. I say that if a deal doesn't upgrade any of the above without diminishing any of the above, you stay put.

No 1sts/Hardy/Green on top?
Masai strikes me as a pain to deal with. Unless i was really underrating DFS/Wood market value. And overrating Siakam's price.

Wouldn't mind a frontcourt of Wood/Olynyk.

You wouldn't have to start KO, Kidd would need to figure out who to start but honestly I don't think there is a huge talent drop-off from DFS to KO and you are getting a first for another deal.
My issue with DFS is they play him like he is a point of attack defender and he isn't that good at guarding the perimeter anymore. I would like to see Green in the starting lineup at some point to be our main perimeter defender. I also think Maxi would be a better person to start at PF when he gets back. In that situation KO would be fine as a backup big.
I doubt Mavs would just trade DFS for KO without any other moves but we do have a wing logjam a little bit atm. Mavs could start Green, DP, Bullock, KO, eventually Maxi. I think DFS hit his peak last year and is in decline. I would rather cash in now while he still has value based on his reputation as a good 3D player.

Masai has an upcoming pain he has to deal with in Siakam. FVV and Trent get the most attention because they can be free this summer. But, Siakam will ask for a 35% Super Max extension THIS SUMMER if he makes All-NBA again. That’s $290mm plus the $38mm he’s owed for 23/24. And, if he doesn’t make All-NBA, he could certainly sign a regular 30% max veteran extension. But, he could also ‘bet on himself’ and see if he can make All-NBA next year. That would make him UFA in the summer of 24.
Surely Toronto doesn’t want to pay him a 35% max and surely they don’t want him to get to UFA a year from now. I guess they could throw money at all of their guys, but then they are just bringing back the same losing roster they have now. None of this means Dallas has any advantage over anyone else. Toronto is the only team that can give him a 35% max extension. Everyone else has to treat him just like any other 7th year guy with a year remaining on his current Vet Deal. He won’t be cheap, but I think there is an argument for Toronto to move on and build a front court around Barnes instead.

No. THJ is unfortunately not efficient

Nope, you are also missing a starting wing on your list.

Siakam to mavs. OG to knicks. DFS to jazz. Unprotected picks to raptors
Knicks- OG, Bullock
Mavs- Siakam, Beasley, Vanderbilt, Reddish
Jazz- DFS
Raptors- Mavs 3 FRP’s, Knicks 2 FRP’s, Jazz draft capital(in exchange for DFS)……plus Hardy, Grimes, Wood, plus matching contracts
Would needs some more players added to satisfy everything

So, we'd end up with...
Point - Luka, NEED
Guard - Din, THJ
Guard - Green, Beasley, Reddish
Forward - Vanderbilt, Maxi
Center - Siakam, Powell
If we could also get Quickley, that's a pretty stout rotation.

So looks like we could get a first rounder for DFS, maybe from the Jazz
what do you guys consider realistic from the Heat where we get a first back?
is Dinwiddie + Bullock for Lowry enough?
I'm sure they would want to dump Robinson for Dinwiddie or maybe Hardaway but that puts us in a situation where we have yet another hard to move contract that would drag down a star trade
I'll have so much love for Nico if we somehow come away from this deadline with 2 extra first rounders and a decent shot of falling to the 10th pick
Well that even opens up a move with Wood plus picks if he's iffy on an extension.
