Dallas has a Trade Exception that would help the process, but it will expire before Brunson can be Signed & Traded. Brunson has played himself into $20+ million to start and Max years with max raises for Dallas to retain him. Depending on how his new found production is maintained with Luka, he is pushing his initial salary toward the Max as well. JB gonna get paid and I hope he remembers the Kidd who drove the Brinks truck for him -
One advantage in keeping JB is that he seems to LOVE the team AND is apparently an incredibly loyal player... I sure don't want to find out if he carries grudges against teams that undervalue him. When you have a guy who just scored 30 points in consecutive playoff wins and loves the team, the solution is simple... pay the man.

Truth.
That's why Burke got his $3m/yr. deal.

It actually becomes much easier, if a third team is involved

As far as I know, FA is expected to start approximately one month before TE expires

I believe it is the normal max. Something like 120 for 4. Might be closer to 130 now.
I don't think this is something we are going to have to worry about yet. He has had two great games against a poor perimeter defense. The biggest question on him is how he performs against a long, quality defense in the playoffs. He has not faced that yet this season. If they make it to the Suns, we will get a lot better picture of this.

Yeah my take:
1) JB has proven me wrong in my first level of doubt (I did not think he could do this in the playoffs, period), he has grown up immensely in a way I didn't think he could.
2) But JB still must prove he can do this against good perimeter defense. Like you said, UTA is abominable in so many ways defensively. Without Gobert they might be the worst defense in the league.
I really, really, really hope the Mavs win this series so we can see JB against another opponent to get a larger sample size on this.

Thanks!
BTW, fixed it for you...
Also, I'm not sure PHX is a lock for winning over NOP right now. What with Booker out for the next few weeks.

Maybe. But Maxi rains threes (along with others) when Rudy is on the floor. So not sure if this is really accurate.

IMO, it's not that Rudy can't guard Maxi. It's that he can't guard Maxi while simultaneously covering for the defensive shortcomings of every other teammate. I see Rudy as a perennial DPOY candidate who has become a bit of a scapegoat for the team defense as a whole.

Rudy doesn't try to cover 3pt shooters. Do you really think that's because of the scheme? I'm not sure he can even do it. And it's not that much of a knock on him. There aren't many (any?) guys his size that can.

JB's full max is 5years/176mil.
Essentially the same contract MPJ just got.
I don't think he's played himself into 30 mil a year with max raises. But 25-26? I'm ready to give that to him 100%.

I figured we're at least 5/110. If we can do 120 then sure. You give him an option at the end of it and now you have Luka/DFS/Brunson under contract for the next 4 seasons and you can fill in the gaps from there.

Gobert is a great rim protector, the best in the league. But yes, with so many teams able to go small at center with players who can stretch the floor, it's a tough cover. And then on the opposite end of the floor, Gobert can't do that himself and be a floor-spacing threat. If only he was able to shoot then he'd be fine and still playable (ex: see Brook Lopez)
You look at the recent NBA champs, they have all had a stretch big man/center in the playoffs:
2021 Bucks - Lopez
2020 Lakers - AD
2019 Raptors - Gasol
2017-18 Warriors - Draymond (small ball lineup)

I thought the TE expired about a month after the draft, but I might still be drunk after Brunson last night!
Seriously I would be incredibly disappointed if we traded Brunson or he walked...
I would be even more distraught if I was the 3rd team that helped Dallas get who they wanted, while another team got Brunson AND settled for Dallas' leftovers

I really don't think its going to cost 25-26. He just had two great playoff games, but they were against a terrible perimeter defense. At the end of the day, he is an undersized secondary playmaker who scores 16 a game and has average defense at best. That is just not the kind of guy teams offer the max to. My guess would be 4 for 80 or 90.
If they go on a long playoff run, and he plays like this against teams like the Suns, then we can start talking about 25+

About Gobert as a trade target, there are 2 ways to look at that
1 He doesn't look so interesting to Mavs and their fans now, when the Mavs exploit him in the playoffs, or
2 The Mavs are doing a great job of lowering the price (and removing the competition) to get him.
I think the Mavs offer would have to be THJ + Powell, with the expectation that you are doing the same thing for Utah that the Wiz did for Dallas in trading for KP -- you are turning one big problematic contract into 2 smaller, usable, easier-to-handle ones on players you can use. Given the massive size of the salary at the end of the deal, I'm not sure you would (or should) offer more than that.
