Maybe the Knicks would sign and trade Robinson for Brunson? That’s about the only decent return I could imagine in an SnT and it doesn’t seem likely. Otherwise, you really have to sign Brunson and roll with it. He can be played off the floor in some situations like we saw tonight, but he’s very good, even tonight really. He had a very efficient night. Just wasn’t the right guy to finish this game.

Not legal. We can't take back a S&T player as things currently stand. Have to come up with some other compensation if this scenario were to play out. Personally, I like having all three. My efforts to fantasy trade Brunson at the TDL were more about the risk we face than the way I see his on court contributions.

You guys keep trying to get rid of him. He was a big reason the Mavs won tonight and and even bigger reason against the Lakers. The expectations of some of the posters here… sheesh

No one is "trying to get rid of him"....what we are wanting is the Mavs to upgrade their roster in any way possible.
I think there are too many scenarios (playoffs in particular) where JB's size is going to be a detriment on both ends and he won't be in the closing five. I want the Mavs to invest on upgrading their closing five. It is my opinion that JB isn't the best for that in the long term. Just my opinion, that is all.

There wasn’t a single vocal person here that wanted to “get rid of him”.

I respect your opinion and obviously don’t agree. Maybe one day you’ll see what I see in Brunson. The dude has “it”. Improved every year. I’ll admit I root for the undersized, hard working guy to succeed in the NBA and I’ve been wrong before (I liked the initial KP trade) but I think JB is a winning player on a winning team.

I put SnT scenarios being mentioned in the “get rid of him” pile. Basically anyone suggesting the Mavs don’t resign him this off-season. And there are plenty of those posts if you scroll through.

Looking at NBA.com the NBA average DRTG is 110.6
Lowry career 105.4 DefRtg
Lowry first 4 years: 105 DefRtg
Brunson career 108.2 DefRtg
Lowry Defensive Win Shares first 4 years: 1.3 / 1.8 / 1.4 / 1.8
Brunson Defensive Win Shares first 4 years: 1.0 / 0.6 / 1.1 / 2.2
Those are boxscore stats which generally do a poor job assessing defensive value. The best on/off advanced stats (EPM/Lebron/Darko) all have Brunson defense roughly -.5 to -1 and Lowry roughly .5 to 1. Those stats are not perfect either, but they do ok over a big enough sample size (in this case several years), and they show a significant difference between the two players.

I’m a fan of JB for sure. He really needs to be resigned, especially since it sounds like a decent SnT scenario isn’t even legal. What else are the Mavs going to do?

Stumbled on this. USA won, Brunson was a tournament MVP, while Tatum was also playing.

I think this is the right way to look at it, but I'm curious who you see on this roster outside of Luka/DFS/Din that belongs in the closing 5? There is nobody else on this team close to as good as Brunson. I also find it highly unlikely that you are going to be able to replace him with a better fitting piece in an S&T, given the difficulties in executing that trade and the fact that his primary suitors either already have cap space or can get it reasonably easily.
I would argue the route to go this coming offseason is to find the 5th closer alongside Luka/DFS/Din/Brunson. Given that group, an athletic defensive center that is better offensively than Maxi (and can handle a starting workload) would make the most sense. Then in the future if Brunson is still getting abused in the playoffs you can look to improve on that spot.

I am 100% with you.
I am just trying to be clear that I think in the LONG RUN the Mavs need to be looking to upgrade the JB spot. SIGN HIM this summer PLEASE if there is no upgrade possible. But at least be on the lookout.

It will be very interesting to see how he does in these playoffs. Hopefully it will more than double his playoff sample size, and could have a large impact on how potential free agent suitors (including the Mavs) look at him long term.

Don't freak out but I believe this just means Brunson played like a $31.5M/year player tonight. Either way, it's all dolla signs for JB this summer $$$$$
