If it takes years for JG, would he be worth the wait? Okay, I like the DFS comparison. Let’s say in 4 years Green has a quality shot(I think he has a quality shot at having a quality shot) and his defense is on par with DFS(I think given his frame and athleticism this is a likely scenario) But it’s the intangibles that really set DFS apart. Let’s say he never reaches the level of intangibles that DFS brings, but he turns out to be a hard worker and gets better and better. There is one big difference between DFS and Green. Green was a 1st round pick and for that reason, he should have a much higher ceiling. In theory at least. He does have an offensive repertoire that may or may not be useful beyond a role player, but potential is there. Markannen is sort of the bigger unknown to me. He was a top 10 pick so in theory should have an even higher ceiling. And thus far, in his time in the nba he’s shown to be a productive player and a marksmen. Yet, we are sort of buying low on him. And maybe he has some level of star potential still. So after getting this far I see why GM’s get paid the big bucks! I have no idea which way to go. Hoping Nico-Finley have a better clue!
Thank you Donnie.

^ That's why I hated the Green pick. I don't see the offensive ceiling. The shot is a work in progress. He has no handles. He's a poor finisher in traffic. I do see some vision/passing ability.
At #18, either take a polished guy (Saddiq or Quickley) or take a guy that has a higher ceiling (Maxey or RJ Hampton type). You're going to wait 3-4 years on Green to become a role player and by that time if you're successful, he'll likely be expensive to retain.

He was a reach for me when better players went after him. As you've already mentioned, who has time to wait for him to develop?

That is why I think trading Josh Green for Lauri Markkanen is fair and is. more in line with the Mavs' time line with Luka. Luka is in a win-now mode. The Mavs need players who can contribute now or at the bery least will develop into something that can contribute something with the team in the soonest possible time. Lauri is more of that than Green. Lauri at least has proven that he can score in the league and has potential upside in defense. Compared to Green who has 2-way upside but would need serious development, and the Mavs seem to not. have that for Green judging from their personnel acquisitions of late.

What Luka most needs is defense and 3-point shooting. Josh gives you one, Lauri the other. I don’t care much about such guys. I prefer Reggie and Sterling. And THJ, and DFS, and healthy Maxi, and the KP of my dreams.

However, Green is still raw, needs development, and will need playing time to develop. Unfortunately, with thr acquisition of Bullock and S. Brown, he will have difficulty finding playing time with the team. Lauri 's fit with the Mavs is not perfect because of his defense, but he is a talent that wants to be with the Mavs. For me, I look at it as at the very least, he will be an asset that they can use later on to acquire a player who fits more of what the team needs.

IF they can get Lauri for TPE and IF they are able to put him in a position to succeed, he will be a great asset. I think the second "IF" might be more problematic than the first one.

Powell + 2nd round pick for Beverley? Wait for the Dragic buyout and focus on Markkanen.

I think probability of Beverly buy out is much higher than the one of Dragic. If they are going to buy him out, it will happen before season start as they need to cut three players (or trade away) to get the team down to 15. But I don't think Beverly is a solution. He is not a facilitator.

I think "peak Maxi" is behind us and the Mavs cashing in that developed player for a younger project with more potential is the right way to go IMO.

Certainly an option to consider, especially as they would still have the TPE to use for a back-up PF. How much would Cleveland want for Nance? I was expecting way more trades to happen this offseason. Cleveland, Sacramento, Houston and Orlando with their vets and so on. I wonder what the hold-up is. |
