Mavericks hire Dusty May as next Head Coach

According to the Detroit Free Press, two assistants are on their way out. Per Tony Garcia, the Wolverines are losing Drew Williamson and newly-hired Mody Maor (who had been an international coach) to May's Mavericks, adding to the list that includes Boynton's ascension and Justin Joyner taking over the Oregon State program as holes that the program has to fill.

Drew Williamson, an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Wolverines the past two seasons, has left U-M and joined the Mavericks' staff as an assistant coach, a source with knowledge of the situation but permitted to speak anonymously told the Free Press.

Williamson was the program's recruiting coordinator as well as an assistant coach under May. He followed May to Ann Arbor after having served as an assistant coach under him at Florida Atlantic. Before that, he was an associate head coach and assistant head coach at Division II Virginia State and the director of basketball operations at Old Dominion.

Maor was hired by May on May 10, and was expected to fill Joyner's shoes. He most recently coached in Japan but also coached in New Zealand.

I think we should start a discussion about our predictions for hiow May is going to coach the Mavs.

In my opinion, this is the single biggest factor that can influence success. It seems like 95%+ of the conversations are about how to get rid of our players or summer league rookies and 2-ways.

The average fan can only see what is right in front of their faces. They are like a home buyer who can’t see the value in a fixer-upper because they don’t have vision.

Well it’s time to stretch ourselves and try to have a little vision.

So first, let’s look at exactly what May has said. He wants pace, space and he wants to tailor the basketball to players strengths. He has already begun to meet with and have conversations with players about what they do best and how to work into the system.

Let’s take one obvious thing that no one seems to consider. And it’s about Klay. At GS Klay spent his prime constantly flying off pin-downs, flares, and split cuts, which kept defenses in a permanent panic. This cuts in well with May wanting more speed spacing and movement. Expect Klay to perform better this year as a result.

If Sergio can control his handle, expect him and Sasser to team up with Gafford on the second team for high pick and rolls.

I also expect PJ to get back to his corner threes which will benefit from spacing and shots earlier in the possession clock.

I expect Kyrie to dribble penetrate to lead action, with Flagg free to take the open 3 or drive to the basket after the defense over commits.

Whether it’s Max or Sasser or Larry or Klay or PJ or Flagg or Tarik, I think May will be pushing everyone to shoot, shoot, shoot. I wouldn’t be surprised if Dallas was near the top ok attempted 3 pointers this year.

This will lead to more dribble drives and kick outs as the defense reacts to catch up.

Gone are the days of ISO and Luka ball. Here comes a fast paced whole team oriented approach instead.
