TIER ONE: PLAYERS WHO COULD BE THE BEST PLAYER ON A TITLE TEAM RIGHT NOW UNDER THE RIGHT CIRCUMSTANCES

1. Luka Doncic | 6-8 guard, 21 years old | Dallas Mavericks | Contract: 2 years, $18.2 million, restricted in 2022 | PR: 1

Doncic is on a different level. He’s on an absolutely historic pace, accomplishing things that basically no other player in league history has for his age. Last year, Doncic averaged 28.8 points, 8.8 assists and 9.4 rebounds on a 58.5 true-shooting percentage. The only players to have done that? Michael Jordan, Oscar Robertson and James Harden. Only Robertson has averaged those counting stats more than once. Doncic is on pace to do it twice before he turns 22. In the playoffs, he was up over 30 points, nine rebounds and eight assists, something only three other players have done over a playoff series. Those guys are LeBron, Russell Westbrook and Robertson. Everyone Doncic is in discussion with has won at least one MVP award.
Anything less than winning MVP at some point in his career would honestly be a disappointment individually given the trajectory Doncic is on. He finished fourth in the MVP race playing the majority of his season at 20 years old last year. He would have been the youngest player in league history to finish top five in the MVP race last year had the season ended on time. This season feels like a very slight disappointment for Doncic, and all he’s done so far is average 29.1 points, 9.4 assists and 8.9 rebounds on the same true-shooting percentage as last season. The standard he’s held to is different than any other young player in the league because he’s already accomplished so much. Oh, and by the way, as Doncic plays himself into shape this year, the performances are starting to get better and better.
I don’t know that I need to break down why Doncic is so good. He’s an elite ballhandler with elite court vision, great touch and genius-level basketball IQ. He decelerates better than anyone in the league not named Harden. He’s stronger than just about anyone guarding him, which allows him to get to his spots at will. He executes passes from any angle and any spot on the court off a live dribble. I’ll focus on what is, in my opinion, an underrated part of Doncic’s game. Simply put, Doncic is an utterly-elite-level finisher. Last year, he made 65 percent of his shots around the rim. The only players to top that percentage last year were centers who finish a majority of their shots around the basket as dunks and Giannis Antetokounmpo. He made 45 percent of his floaters too. This year, he’s upped that floater mark to an absurd 59 percent while he’s down to merely an above-average mark of 58 percent at the rim in half-court settings.
Why is he so good around the rim? Because he’s better at opening up a clean angle toward the rim with his footwork than anyone. Euro steps? He’s got them. Little spin finishes on reverse layups? Yeah, those are there. Old man up-and-unders? Of course he has those in his bag. Wrong-footed, “off-balance” finishes? Yeah, except when he takes them, they aren’t off balance.
I would totally agree with someone who says Doncic needs to improve on defense. That’s accurate, and it’d be nice to see him be less of a liability on that end. But at the end of the day, good offense beats good defense in the NBA, and Doncic is coming off a season where he put up not just historic individual offensive numbers but also led Dallas to a league-record offensive efficiency. Having said that, though, Dallas certainly needs to do a better job of finding players who fit around him. They particularly need to find a real answer to team defense because the Mavericks have been atrocious on that end this season. In my opinion, Doncic is not the main culprit (Kristaps Porzingis’ immobility in pick-and-roll has played the critical role), but he’s not helping solve the issue. They can’t be the disaster they have been this year, and it’s possible Porzingis may need to move on elsewhere if this current iteration of him is more of his new reality. Even last year’s play on that end, where the team finished 18th in defensive efficiency, could be close to enough.
There is no young player in the NBA for whom teams would pay more in order to acquire, and no player executives have more faith in building a consistent title contender around. Doncic is the best young NBA player since LeBron James, even more so than Anthony Davis. He’s rightfully made first-team All-NBA last season and will be a mainstay on those teams for the next decade.

Check this out.... DFS basically gets the BEST looks in the whole NBA from the 3 point line....and basically does nothing with that from an efficiency standpoint. Crazy.
