Both teams man handled us during the year. There is a legit argument that had they versed any other team in the NBA they'd have gone to the finals this year alone. Just because they took the Clipps to 7 games does not mean had they won, they would get to the Finals. Are we totally dismissing Utah who they would have played next? Then Phoenix. C'mon man, every series is different. Matchups are different. The Hawks traded away this generation’s Lebron James. It doesn’t get much worse than that. It's hardly the most lopsided trade in history. That trade was a win-win for both teams. Pump the brakes bruh... AI was great, but the league didn’t revolve around him for a decade plus. You can’t trade away a once in a generation player and call it a win win. RE: AROUND the NBA: McCollum trade "probable" | PHX vs MIL in Finals - dirkfansince1998 - 07-05-2021 In a way Trae not being as good as Luka in his first two seasons helped the Hawks. Two more drafts with high lottery picks. Added Hunter (legit starting wing) and Okongwu (really promising big, earned a rotation spot in the playoffs). The Mavs with one more lottery level talent would be in a way better situation. Just imagine the current Mavs rotation with Hunter instead of Richardson/Burke. Yeah what are the odds that the Mavs would have tanked properly, actually kept the pick or made a good choice. Imagine this lineup with Mitchell. Would have been really difficult to screw up in 2019. Only potential bust among the top picks is Culver and I would still take him over guys like Hinton, Bey or Terry. Or Adebayo, Collins, Anunoby, Allen. Even White, Kennard or Hart. In hindsight DSJ was a terrible pick. At least they realized it and moved him before he could tank his value even further. In hindsight the KP trade probably was a mistake as well but at that point in time most people thought that the Mavs robbed the Knicks. No disagreement..... ....BUT the Mavs shot themselves in the foot by not tanking properly in 2017 (before Luka) OR tanking properly in 2019 (in Luka's 1st season to try to keep that pick). The Mavs SHOULD have had one more "closer to elite" talent in the fold, maybe two if luck was on their side. Instead they ended up with only Luka. In large part I blame RC who is on the record saying in that time: Quote:"Future draft picks to me are of very little interest" - Rick Carlisle (2018) Maybe the philosophy came from above RC and it wasn't his fault, but IMO he was one of the guys who never really seemed interested in the draft and that might have permeated the whole front office for 13 years. RE: AROUND the NBA: McCollum trade "probable" | PHX vs MIL in Finals - dirkfansince1998 - 07-05-2021 (07-05-2021, 10:02 AM)Kammrath Wrote: No disagreement..... Agree on the not tanking probably part. Also think that RC wasn´t the right coach for a team that was trying to lose. In the end the established coaches think about themself and their reputation. Pop, RC, Spoelstra. Most coaches won´t lose on purpose. That´s why Bird moved on from RC. Contention window for Indiana closed and they started the rebuild. Spurs are in a similar situation right now. Pop is squeezing the the best possible results out of a mediocre roster but they lost in the play in tournament. I think Donnie was really high on the draft most of the time. As he should because scouting (especially in europe) was his job before he became the GM. RC prefered vets and win now players (like most coaches) but looking back at the roster construction of the last few years I really think that he had no influence on most of the decisions (see Rondo). I blame RC for the late season wins from 2017-19 that cost the Mavs lottery positions but I don´t think that the overall approach of trying to win with mediocre vets like Barnes/Matthews is on him. Cuban (with Dirks support) tried to take short cuts and chased big names. We all know the Donnie/Giannis/Cuban saga. We also know how the Mavs used 2nd round picks. PR stunts instead of searching for the best available player. RE: AROUND the NBA: McCollum trade "probable" | PHX vs MIL in Finals - ClutchDirk - 07-05-2021 I disagree on Carlisle being a tanking coach...he had some really unique last 5 minute lineups and last play of the game plays... In hindsight the KP trade probably was a mistake as well but at that point in time most people thought that the Mavs robbed the Knicks. The Mavs did rob the Knicks. They got 2 high quality players and 1 guy who is at the very least a great starter no matter if he's a star or not or any defensive issues. And they gave up 2 crappy 1sts. Now the trade gets a little bit worse if THJ leaves and you get nothing for him in a SNT. Or if you decide to dump KP for cap space. I still do that trade 10/10 times. RE: AROUND the NBA: McCollum trade "probable" | PHX vs MIL in Finals - KillerLeft - 07-05-2021 Looks like Mosley is finely making it to second interview status with a couple of teams. https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/1412114670060773377?s=20 RE: AROUND the NBA: McCollum trade "probable" | PHX vs MIL in Finals - KillerLeft - 07-05-2021 (07-05-2021, 01:05 PM)cjeter24 Wrote: a great starter no matter if he's a star or not or any defensive issues. Serious question, not intended with any snark, whatsoever: If KP is not a star, which by definition means that he is not great at creating offense for himself or others, and he has massive "defensive issues," then what makes you so confident he's a "great starter?" It's not even that I disagree with this take. In order to disagree I'd have to understand where this take is coming from. I just can't see it at all, and I'm starting to feel like I'm crazy or something. RE: AROUND the NBA: McCollum trade "probable" | PHX vs MIL in Finals - Mavs2021 - 07-05-2021 (07-05-2021, 01:05 PM)cjeter24 Wrote: The Mavs did rob the Knicks. How do you know they are crappy? Have the Knicks selected somebody yet? 2. You also ignore the fact that DSJ + two first round picks could have yielded a different player in a different trade. I believe the Cavs paid a protected 1st and a 2nd for Jarrett Allen and Taurean Prince. So I´d argue that Allen, Prince, a retained 2023 Mavs 1st round pick, full future pick trade flexibility and $15M in additional capspace could be considered a better position already. |
