I think Dallas would wind up with Horford and Smart, Boston would have KP + Dallas filler and OKC would get Kemba plus a draft pick.

Dallas gets a starting 5 and SG, both that fit in Dallas system and actually play defense. Boston turns Kemba and Smart into KP. OKC does its annual trick of getting a pick to take a pretty good player.

For Kemba I don't think he would complain knowing he might get a "rest year" where he's not playing a lot of playing in a weird role with a bunch of kids. In his final year he could be moved to a contender or bought out.

Mavs rotations. would be something like:

Luka/Brunson
Smart/THJ
DFS/Green
Maxi or FA Wing
Horford/Powell/WCS

Not exactly sure who the starting 5 would be but Rick. has some options. The defense would definitely be improved and. Horford fits the stretch 5 Rick likes in his system.

I don't want anything to do with Horford taking 27 mil of "my" cap space.

Mavs would send some filler (eg Burke) or maybe J Rich for salary matching so they could operate over the cap. I think with THJ likely to stay there won't be a lot of usable cap space leftover, I might be wrong. I have been under the assumption that Mavs aren't going to "miss out" on some big name if they operate over the cap. I also might want RW3 back in the deal to add some center depth so that Mavs just need MLE to find a wing (e.g. Batum)

Horford is still underrated. He is a very good modern 5 on offense and defense. His last year is only half guaranteed. So I like him. Smart and Horford are both playoff players.

You would love Horford. He actually does things we thought KP would do.

Why did Boston want to get rid of Horford so quickly?...

Because he is not the player these guys are saying he is (anymore).

And did OKC trade for him because of talent/fit?...

RE: AROUND the NBA: Ainge OUT in BOS w/ Brad Stevens moving to front office - ClutchDirk - 06-02-2021

If I'm trading for the "Ghost" of a player I need them to be cheap or have another player incoming that would make a difference...

Boston didn’t want to get rid of Horford they just didn’t want to match the crazy deal Philli gave him as a free agent.
Philli quickly realised that Horford and Embiid couldn’t play together especially with a non shooting Simmons.
So they dumped him on OKC to free up salary cap space.

But yes he is no where  near the player he was in Atlanta or his early years in Boston.
If he was available at MLE money then nearly every team in the league would be interested.

They wanted to resign him actually but the Sixers offered him a huge deal remember?

Right so the Horford/Embiid pairing was completely stupid. Horford is a 5 in today's NBA. He is older but still a good player. Reminds me of sort of like Tim Duncan who was still really good even into his golden years. You basically have one year of 27 mil then partially guaranteed for half of that his final year.

RE: AROUND the NBA: Ainge OUT in BOS w/ Brad Stevens moving to front office - Aussiebballer - 06-02-2021

It just comes down to what you are giving up to get him.
If they trade KP to another team and send unwanted salary to OKC with a minor draft asset to get Horford.
Then fine as long as they also get something good from the team getting KP.

But using cap space to trade for Horford is a major waste of potential assets/opportunities and would require OKC sending Dallas picks.
If OKC decided to say ef it lets cash in some of these picks and get a good running partner for Shai then maybe Dallas could jump in and take Horford with a pick as well.

I am not proposing using up cap space really. I think you could probably dump Burke in the process. Mavs might lose a little bit of cap space but its pretty close to MLE anyway so I think Mavs would use MLE + BAE in lieu of cap space, given that THJ will likely be resigned.

This isn't necessarily my favorite deal out of the dozen or so that I have endorsed but essentially trading KP + filler for Smart and Horford would work for me. KP is a negative player to me and his value, attitude is only going to as time goes on so I would be thrilled to get back 2 very good, gritty competitors back without the long-term salary commitments of KP.

RE: AROUND the NBA: Ainge OUT in BOS w/ Brad Stevens moving to front office - Aussiebballer - 06-02-2021

If the Pacers decide to blow up their team could try a deal of KP for Turner or KP + Green for Brogdon.
KP + Green, Terry, 2025 and 2027 picks for Sabonis would be crazy but fun.

There has to be change this offseason if we loose to the Clippers yet again.

FIFY. There's the problem. Cuban is the one who decided he knew better than everyone else that the draft was not important enough to be great at. Cuban was the reason Nash walked - he knew better than everyone else who to pay. Cuban (and his belief he knew better than the league about the new CBA) was the reason the Mavs threw their oozing-with-talent team in the dumper and couldn't win again after a title - he knew better than everyone else how to quickly assemble talent for the next generation of winners. Cuban was the reason that 2-time MVP Giannis plays for the Bucks - he knew better than everyone else how to manage the draft and the cap. And no doubt he has fingerprints in the messed up pie in many more places too.

Changes? Be real. If you can figure out how to make that problem somehow go away, please do.

Surprised Boston didn’t wait to see what Masai Ujiri does.
There is also talk they could make one of Steven’s assistants the new head coach.
That would make the whole process a major mistake for me.

I’ve long said he needs someone like Jerry West to come in and go toe to toe with his dumb. Donnie is not it and because of that, he isn’t a very good FO dude. I know Cuban isn’t going to bring that kind of guy in though, but it’s what is really needed.

I think Ainge could be a guy like that. Even in his playing days he was passionate about what he thought.
