I'm sure that's setting off some alarm bells around the league, with teams wondering if it's now a chronic issue. I'm glad DAL didn't spend assets to acquire him, but it's sad he's hurt again.

IF ... "the Lakers win out" (i.e., Lakers defeat Pacers on Saturday, AND Lakers defeat Pelicans on Sunday), ...

AND the Suns defeat the Trail Blazers tonight, ...

AND the Mavs defeat the Raptors tomorrow night, ...

THEN the Mavs will absolutely, positively  be the #5 SEED, ...

REGARDLESS of the outcome of the Mavs vs. Timberwolves game on Sunday night AND  REGARDLESS of the outcome of the Trail Blazers vs. Nuggets game on Sunday night.

This post got me really excited.

Then I realized the Mavs need to show up against a below .500 team  Sad

The Mavs surely have a boatload of incentive to win their final regular-season home game against Toronto tomorrow night.

And in other news ...

I hope I'm in a position to enjoy the Nuggets vs. Blazers game on Sunday night [with the Mavs, at that point, being unaffected by Denver's choice of methods by which to screw the hated Lakers, i.e., by "tanking" (or not) against Portland].

Of course, the NBA has made my life more complicated than I would prefer by scheduling all of the following games to start at 8:00 PM CDT:

Mavericks vs. Timberwolves

Trail Blazers vs. Nuggets

Lakers vs. Pelicans

Clippers vs. Thunder

Jazz vs. Kings

The most important Western Conference game on Sunday [the last day of the regular season] will probably be the Warriors vs. the Grizzlies, the two teams that are already locked in to the #8 and #9 spots in the play-in tournament.

Memphis and Golden State are currently tied in the loss column, and they have split their two head-to-head games so far.  Therefore, if they are still within one game of each other as they square off on Sunday [at 2:30 PM CDT], then the winner of that showdown will be the #8 play-in team, and the loser will be the #9 play-in team.

Although the media (and possibly also the members of this group) have focused more attention on the difference between finishing the regular season in sixth place rather than seventh place, I would contend that there is actually a much more significant "gap" between eighth place and ninth place.

Seriously ... do the math.

I have heard the schedule had changed, or will be changing, and that ALL 30 TEAMS will have a tip-off in the afternoon on the final day.

I think the reasoning is to prevent any team from getting the advantage of knowing what their competition has done, in how they play their own game. Or in planning for what comes next, since some teams will have a play-in tourney to quickly plan for, at the end of the games.

I would speculate they will set it so that all EC games will be early games with the very same tip-off time (EDT), and all WC games will follow with the same tip-off time (EDT).

ADDED - This is how Shams reported it on May 9:

For NBA’s final day of regular season on May 16, all 30 teams — 15 games — will play in afternoon starting between 12-3:30 pm ET.

What about the Rockets vs. the Hawks?   Wink

Since that's only relevant to EC standings, and is being played in ATL, it would obviously get slotted in the early time.

Or maybe what I heard isn't accurate. We'll see.

ADDED - This is what Shams reported on May 9

For NBA’s final day of regular season on May 16, all 30 teams — 15 games — will play in afternoon starting between 12-3:30 pm ET.

All six games Saturday will be between same afternoon times

Kings could catch the Spurs.

Mavs might go into the play in.

Mavs may play the Kings for the 8th spot.

Delon Wright goes for 30/10/10

You can rest easy now, Hypermav.  Those pesky Kings have been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs (including the play-in tournament).

Congratulations to the San Antonio Spurs, who are now LOCKED IN as the #10 team in the play-in tournament.

Better luck next season, Sacramento.

Not only did the Grizzlies' 116-110 victory over the Kings tonight eliminate Sacramento from the playoffs and guarantee the #10 play-in spot for San Antonio, but it also set up the big showdown between the Grizzlies and the Warriors on Sunday.

Two of tomorrow night's games have now been rendered utterly meaningless (both the Grizzlies vs. Kings rematch and the Warriors vs. Pelicans game).

REGARDLESS of the outcome of Memphis vs. Sacramento (Friday, May 14) and  REGARDLESS of the outcome of Golden State vs. New Orleans (Friday, May 14), the winner of the Warriors vs. Grizzlies game (Sunday, May 16) will be the #8 team in the play-in tournament, and the loser will be the #9 team in the play-in tournament.
