The fly in the ointment for that theory to me is that they were trying hard to trade for RoCo before the draft who is in the bigger wing defender mold that Bey is.   So I don't know what made them think that wasn't a need anymore after striking out on RoCo.   Also, I'm pretty sure the JRich trade was already in their backpocket, so it's not like they needed immediate guard defense moreso than wing defense.
I disagree that the Richardson trade was in their pocket when the 18th pick was made. They more than likely thought there was still a chance on a bigger wing rather than Richardson and were trying to fill need and had Green/S.Bey pretty close on the board...

2nd thought would be that they knew they were landing Iwundu and somehow thought some guy from Orlando would be better.

Beal and Westbrook just ate up Utah.  Westbrook didn't make me gag.  He is like 28 15 13 and Beal 41 pts.

LOL. I get holding out for the best deal you can get, but that's so delusional it's cringe.

What a tool that owner is. Did he really think Oladipo had more trade value than JA/Lavert. That might get you Wiseman, of course expiring Oladipo not so much.

I don't remember Green being on a lot of those wishlists, at least not at 18. Is my Alzheimer's kicking in early?

Good one.  Big Grin  I was telling anyone that listened, Saddiq Bey was a player. I watched him at Nova, and it was just something about him. I never thought he could shoot the 3 as well as he has, as well as being a good rebounder (had a career high 12 in the win over Toronto. He leads all rookies in 3pt makes with 86.  He also benefitted by getting the chance to play right away. Now he's a starter.

I didn't post the Bey quote to say Green was a mistake either.  That will be figured out in time.   Bey has been playing really well, but he was always going to be further advanced than Green at this stage.   Green is more of a developmental project.  Bey may have more upside in the long run, but I think it is important to give Green some time.   If Green does not earn a spot next year in some kind of regular playing time, I think it will be a disappointing sign for me.   For me I am less concerned about his shooting (although this may take a few years for the pro three), I am more worried about his finishing in the lane.  In the little we have seen Green, he appears to be a good teammate, plays hard, and has a decent feel for the game.    Those are positive signs, but in no way a certainty that he will make it as a very good NBA player.

I see another Justin Anderson with Green. Anderson had POtential, but could never put it all together.

Ya we all feared that even draft night. We will just have to see how things go bc a lot of players like this come in raw and have to put in a lot of work to get better. DFS had the advantage of coming into a team that wasn't very good and just had to beat out Justin Anderson to get minutes. Even though DFS' 3 ball was bad he got better over time.

For Green we will see if he can slide into that type of role where he is a 3D guard. It could be a multi-year project. It's just sad because we could have gotten much more of a sure thing in Bey.

It's also like you get Iwundu off the street and he is sort of in the same spot but didn't cost anything. Iwundu is a very good defender so if he could figure out how to shoot average or better at 3 he could be a rotation player.

Gambling on good defender makes sense. If one of them figures out how to shoot the Mavs have another starting quality player. Liked the MKG signing for the same reason. Thing is that they missed out on guys that can already do both. Bey is a solid defender and good shooter. Bane is not a bad defender and an even better shooter.
Maybe Green´s athleticism gives him a higher ceiling but I just don´t see it. Bey looks like the next Ariza/OPJ. A legit starter on most teams (including the Mavs). A higher ceiling would mean that Green turns into a fringe allstar or at least an above average starter.

Generally speaking, teams don't announce ahead of time who they intend to trade for. IMO, this is clearly something put out either by Rich Paul or perhaps the Pelicans looking to hold it up as evidence for competing offers. So it's less about figuring out what the Clippers have to offer (not much) and more about figuring out what the unnamed 3rd team is already offering or what Ball's camp is trying to orchestrate.

It worries me that you might be wrong and Clippers actually pulling it off.
