Marc Stein (@TheSteinLine)
Dallas will formally rule out Luka Dončić (left calf contusion) from tonight's preseason finale against Milwaukee, sources say. Dončić has only gone through one practice since taking an inadvertent kick in a Sept. 29 pickup game.

Chuck Cooperstein (@coopmavs)
Per JKidd, Gafford starts at center tonight. Kidd has said that he expected both centers to start games this year and that it wouldn't necessarily be because of injury. 6:40 tip @theeagledallas

Brad Townsend (@townbrad)
Kidd hopes to get 20-25 minutes out of Washington tonight, not sure if Irving or Thompson “will touch the 4th quarter,” which he says mostly will be a quarter for backups to backups.

Noah Weber (@noahweber00)
Jason Kidd “is not worried” about anyone’s availability outside of Dante Exum for next week.

Says Luka Doncic “looked good” yesterday and hopes Maxi Kleber can get into some contact work soon.

Mike Curtis (@MikeACurtis2)
Doc Rivers says Giannis Antetokounmpo, Damian Lillard, Brook Lopez and Bobby Portia will not play in tonight’s game.

Unfortunately I will not be able to watch this one live tonight. But I am looking forward to more Mavs basketball.

After this, the start of the season is in just 7 days!!!!!!!!

Whoa! Tuning in middle of 3rd to find a completely dead game thread. Go Mavs!

At the least the game wasn't dead with a pretty serious presentstion by the entire team.

Now I'm wondering who's gonna make the cut: Gortman and Sharp are my favorites. For Lawson I'm not sure what the plan is for him, but he better shows some more impact very soon.

Gortman gets a deal of some sort. No brainer.

What sort of "cut" do you think is under consideration? It looks to me like those sort of questions were already decided weeks ago.

NBA roster (limit 15) will consist of the 14 guaranteed deals, plus Morris.

2-ways (limit 3) will be Lawson, Edwards, Williams, who are signed to 2-way deals.

GL (E9 or E10 deals, converted to GL deals with a bonus, limit 6) will be Gortman, Sharp, Miller.

RE: Preseason Game 4: Milwaukee Bucks vs. Dallas Mavericks | 6:30pm CST on TNT - SleepingHero - 10-18-2024

Notes from this game:
  • Kyrie Irving is a monster at basketball. My goodness gracious. Pure basketball poetry when he's out there.
  • Klay Thompson is a monster. Yes he started cold, but just one made shot turned the entire tide and it felt like every shot was going in. His gravity is immense. I see the Bucks selling out everyone to stop Klay. Seeing him get mini-hot was so fun.
  • Dereck Lively's post game is real and the League should beware. That one little left turn around hookshot off balance with the time dwindling sealed it for me. This dude is going to be scary. He flashed some touch last year, but in the first half alone he had 3 beautiful push shots. Its getting to the point where I want the Mavs to spam Lively post ups if he has a mismatch.
  • Is Spencer Dinwiddie washed...? It feels like he has no burst heading to the rim. He's not really setting up guys either. I'm currently going to try and chalk this up to him trying to get his legs in preseason and come regular season he'll look more polished. But I was very much excited that he was signed this offseason. I hope he starts to resemble just a bit of the Dinwiddie of 2 years ago, because that's all the Mavs need. He flashed some of that in the 3rd quarter.
  • Naji Marshall really intrigues me. If his 3pt shot is real he's going to be one of the most important guys off the bench. His ability to create his own shot off the dribble will be huge. He's shown he can really pass the ball too. His defense has been solid but nothing eye-popping yet. He makes some incredibly dumb plays sometimes though. Lance Stephenson esque.
  • Hardy's 3pt shot looks very polished. Heck his entire offensive game looks like it's leveled up this offseason. It's very clear he's a much more polished offensive player. As long as he's playing the off-ball scorer role that is to say. The few preseason games where he plays primary creator he looks pretty messy. But as a scorer? Lethal.  Defensively he gets lost still. I remember in the 3rd quarter he ran away from his man because he misunderstood the switch and gave up a wide open 3 to the center for MIL. His screen navigation also feels like anytime there's a screen he will get laid out. BUT offensively, really, he's become a mini-Kyrie it feels like. Amazing handles. Smooth attacks to the rim. Lethal outside shooting.
  • Whenever I watch OMax, I get happy. I MEAN DID Y'ALL SEE THAT DUNK????? ABSOLUTE POSTER! It's obvious he's still raw but he's improved. I'm very excited to see what he's going to become because when, not if, he puts it together, he is going to be a force.
  • The two-way situation is going to be very interesting. There are 5 legit contenders for at most 2 spots. Emanuel Miller is one of my favorites. He just has great court awareness, touch, and defense. I like him WAY better than AJ Lawson. Gortman won me over. He definitely deserves a 2-way spot. Him and Williams actually have some great chemistry and look like a solid backcourt funnily enough. Kessler Edwards on paper is the most talented of the bunch, but the fact we never saw him makes me not even want to keep him. I suspect the Mavs will though. Finally Sharp is hilarious. I don't see him getting a spot but hopefully he goes to the Legends. Overall, Jaz should definitely get the last spot over Lawson. I still want to find a way to keep Miller if we can.

Lively getting consistent with some runners and push shots would be soooo big, especially against the Celtics
Tatum is strong and fast enough to keep Lively and Gafford from feasting on dunks and layups. He's not long enough to do anything about Lively a bit away from the basket with touch. That could shake up their entire defense

RE: Preseason Game 4: Milwaukee Bucks vs. Dallas Mavericks | 6:30pm CST on TNT - Chicagojk - 10-18-2024

Those lively touch shots are so important. The lefty hooks were nice but the two under 10 feet touch shots are huge. He looked really comfortable shooting those as well.

I liked the rookie from the Bucks (Johnson). 19 years old. Good size and can really move. Then I looked at the box score and saw he was 0-11. LOL. He is a far way away and maybe shooting has always been a negative for him but he looked the part at least.

RE: Preseason Game 4: Milwaukee Bucks vs. Dallas Mavericks | 6:30pm CST on TNT - Chicagojk - 10-18-2024

Backup pg is still a concern. Dinwiddie made some baskets in the second half but I still don’t feel like he has passed the eye test. I expect he will get the minutes early but he will need to earn them to keep them.

It's wishful thinking, abetted by the recent success of the front office. Gortman, Sharp, and Miller are better prospects than Lawson, Edwards, and Williams.

JamesConway912 - JamesConway912 - 10-18-2024

I hope Klay‘s struggles won’t take months to go away. It’s been only three preseason games but his rough starts are really tough on me already. Otoh those few shots who went in within a couple of possessions already felt pretty fricking awesome. They changed the flow of the game entirely. Those quick scoring outbursts were always what made it so frustrating to play GS. You stick around and then someone randomly goes of for 4-5 possessions and suddenly you’re down 12+ points and they won’t stop.

On paper our firepower is ridiculous. Kyrie is still in his prime, Klay might not be his old self but he will have his bursts, PJ, Lively and Gafford can bully and punish you inside and then there’s still Luka.

I too worry about the backup guard spot. Dinwiddie really needs to show that he still has another gear, otherwise things get shaky quickly. Hardy is fun when he is on but even then his defense is a problem. Most other guys are 3D-types, you’ll have to live with the bad and the good, especially on the road.

Overall a pretty subpar preseason though. Grant Hill brought it up on the broadcast, during his days teams used at least the last few games to get some game time repetitions before the real season starts but that’s just not happening anymore. No Luka, no Giannis, no Lillard.

Can’t wait for the real season to finally start.

Looks like a cut actually did happen with Lawson out and Gortman on the two way.  I like the move.

It sure did. Hopefully one or more of the 2-ways will eventually become good enough to be NBA level -- to my recollection, Mavs 2-ways all tend to end up going nowhere.

I was just thinking earlier, how many two-ways have ever actually ended up getting a significant role in the NBA? Off the top of my head I can't think of many.

A list of guys after looking up the last 6 years (not counting this year) of 2-way contract guys here's who I found stood out:
Georges Niang
Gary Payton II
DJJ
Alex Caruso
Torrey Craig
Max Strus
Amir Coffey
John Konchar
Bol Bol
Drew Eubanks
Gabe Vincent
Vince Williams Jr.

Out of 360 possible players over the last 6 years, only 12 guys really got a spot in the league. 3% chance to find a really solid role player.

It's going to increase due to high school kids going to the g league.

I know this is OT, but you brought him up, haha. Given that the Clipps are going to be dead in the water this season, what are the odds we trade some stuff not in our top 8 for DJJ this year? Given what he would add back into our team, I might give up a Hardy or even an OMax for him.
